The Basics
Phoenix, Arizona based Destiny Sober Living offers residential and outpatient care for men and women who are dealing with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The men’s program offers gender-specific treatment using evidence-based protocols, holistic methods and 12-step principles. Destiny Sober Living is a CARF-accredited treatment center that has served Phoenix and the surrounding communities since 1997.
Accommodations and Food
The men’s residential facility consists of a quiet and private fourplex that can accommodate up to four clients per unit. The apartments are fully furnished, offering bedding and linens; washers and dryers; kitchens, and living rooms with cable TV. The residents take turns preparing each other meals with food that is provided by the facility during the weekly grocery shopping trip. Clients can also have their cars, cell phones and computers, though they aren’t allowed to use them during treatment hours.
Treatment and Staff
The men’s program offers a variety of treatment services that are specifically geared towards the way that men handle their recovery. Topics of focus include power and control, feeling shame, experiencing fear and separating one’s self worth from one’s job. The clients work on their communication skills, their ability to open up and express their feelings without embarrassment, anger management and relapse prevention techniques.
A typical days includes an early morning wake up, a 12-step meeting, medications and recreational therapy. There are several group therapy sessions throughout the day as well. Groups can cover DBT skills, life strategies, goal setting, codependency, grief and loss, and parenting skills. In the evening clients attend the 12-step meeting of their choice; AA, NA, Crystal Meth, Heroin or Cocaine Anonymous, as well as peer groups for step work. Clients are given a treatment binder that includes a number of worksheets and writing assignments.
The staff of Destiny Sober Living includes a medical doctor who oversees medication management, an LPC and a CADC.
Extras
There are several family and loved ones support services available, as well as specialty services for children of parents who are in the program.
A couple of times a week clients participate in music and art therapy.
