Design for Recovery Review

Los Angeles based Design for Recovery is a mentoring program and sober living community for young men who are sober and looking for a safe residence that requires accountability during the first stages of recovery. Programming is individualized and includes education on several life and coping skills along with medication management and one-on-one support. There are also daily community meetings and a strong foothold within the 12-step community.

Accommodations and Amenities

The residence is centrally located in Los Angeles in the safe neighborhood of Mar Vista and in close proximity to shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. It offers easy access to Downtown LA, Santa Monica and the airport. Clients live in a two story, four bedroom house with dorm style sleeping arrangements. The home is incredibly spacious and comfortable with living rooms furnished with large, wrap around couches and big screen TVs, an eat-in kitchen and fenced in private backyard.

Food is provided for the clients who are expected to prepare their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

There are three house managers, one of which is the program founder, who operate the day to day experiences in the house, and at least one person is on hand 24 hours a day if they are needed by the clients. There are random drug screenings every week, and daily house meetings. Morning meditations are led by one of the staff who also provide resources and referrals to clients so they can find an AA or NA meetings. Clients have to attend these meetings daily and get a sponsor right away. For those who come into the house with an existing co-occurring disorder and need medication management, staff provides that service along with the safekeeping of all medications.

Within a couple of weeks clients have to have found employment or be enrolled in classes. Referrals and guidance are provided in these areas and staff can help figure out what the best would be for each individual. Additionally clients have access to assistance if they need legal counsel or any medical or dental services. There are regular coaching and mentoring sessions offered as well.

Initially clients have to stay close to the facility and have limited time to be out of the house. As they progress through their program they are able to spend more time away and participate in nightlife and activities. Clients often have movie nights or go out to restaurants and bowling while living in the residence. Since each client is on their own recovery journey there isn’t a specific time that they remain in the program, but on average it’s between 30 and 90 days.

Extras

The facility can offer transportation services to meetings in the area or appointments if needed.

In Summary

Design for Recovery was founded by a young man who benefited greatly from his experience in a men’s only sober living home. He brought his knowledge to this program and offers all of the clients a place where they can learn to live in recovery in an honest and healthy way while rebuilding their lives. Design for Recovery emphasizes the importance of accountability and honesty and provides very supportive mentoring and guidance throughout each clients time in the program.
