Located in Tampa, Florida, the Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House provides outpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment to adolescents and adults, with an additional location in Brandon. Both facilities offer comprehensive dual diagnosis support.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment followed by a meeting with their assigned primary counselor so that an individualized treatment plan can be developed. Programs employ evidence-based practices, such CBT and Seeking Safety.  The duration of treatment ranges between one week and one year, depending on the needs of the client. Though detox is not available, those requiring this phase of recovery can receive referrals.

The adolescent outpatient programs in Brandon and Tampa have a weekly nine-hour Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as a less time intensive outpatient track.  The weekly curriculum, which usually takes place after school, includes group and individual therapy, family counseling, psycho-educational groups, life skills education, recreational activities and random drug and alcohol testing.

The adult outpatient program also facilitates a nine-hour IOP, and a less time intensive outpatient program.  Treatment includes also individual and group therapy, life skills education, and psycho-educational groups; however, the adult outpatient and IOP are offered during the day or in the evening. Groups cover relapse prevention, grief and loss, coping skills, managing emotions in recovery, life after addiction, social support, self-help and the recovery process. Gender-specific groups are available. Adult clients are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

As clients progress through treatment, the intensity of the curriculum lessens as their recovery becomes more grounded. Groups typically average between 12 and 15 clients but groups may be smaller, depending on the time of day. Clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to a psychiatry clinic where they receive medication assessments.

Staff includes a program director, LMHCs and certified addiction professionals.

Extras

Phoenix House believes that addiction is a family disease, and therefore it is imperative that relatives are part of the recovery process. The family program includes counseling, educational workshops and seminars.

Aftercare is provided and after treatment ends, clients are encouraged to attend recovery support groups and participate in alumni activities.

In Summary

The outpatient programs at the Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House are good options for clients who need to attend treatment while also maintaining their work, school or family commitments. The intensity of the IOP is a great alternative for clients who can’t afford to attend a residential treatment program. While AA/NA meetings are encouraged, Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House understands that the 12-step approach is not for everyone and therefore not required.
