With a number of locations throughout Denver, Colorado, Denver Rescue Mission is an expansive organization that provides long-term residential treatment programs and emergency services to homeless men and women. The main track for addiction recovery is the New Life Program, which houses clients at several different facilities throughout the city, one of which is a rural facility called Harvest Farm for men.

Accommodations and Food

The Harvest Farm is a fully functioning farm with animal pens situated on 209 acres of land. The facility has a total of 72 beds and men share dorm-style rooms with three other residents; each equipped with bunk beds, dressers and closet space. As residents progress through the program, they can switch to more spacious rooms with only two to three clients. Clients also share bathrooms and the facility features common areas and on-site laundry. Throughout the program, clients can take advantage of three meals a day in an on-site cafeteria.

Treatment and Staff

Each day begins with a devotional session, which can include reading from the Bible or an inspirational story. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, clients participate in work therapy, which at Harvest Farm means taking care of the animals and helping with tasks around the farm. Tuesdays and Thursdays are generally dedicated to a range of different classes covering life skills, organizational skills based on Franklin Covey seminars, the seven habits of highly effective habit people, relapse prevention, GED tutoring, job searching, resume building and more. While 12-step attendance is not required, residents are encouraged to participate in some kind of off-site self-help program. Serious job hunting generally begins around six months into treatment, at which point clients can transition out of on-site work therapy. Men and women experiencing the symptoms of co-occurring disorders might be better served at a dual diagnosis equipped facility. Also worth noting, at this time Harvest Farm cannot facilitate detox.

Throughout the program, residents are assigned to a chaplain who serves as their case manager and helps them reconnect with family and friends, find a local church community and more. Finally, all clients are required to submit to regular urinalysis tests, complete basic chores and to remain in good standing with the other residents. The average length of stay at Harvest Farm is a year to two years, though it may vary depending on each client’s needs. Those are enrolled in school typically stay longer while those with families tend to leave sooner.

Extras

Denver Rescue Mission also offers its New Life Program its other locations, namely The Crossing for men and Champa House for women. The Crossing is the largest of all the facilities and includes space for the STAR Transitional Program that focuses on providing a safe place for homeless families. Finally, residents of Harvest Farm work with volunteer sober mentors who help them learn the ways of sober living and allow them to build sober relationships to help them once they have completed treatment.

In Summary

Overall, Denver Rescue Mission’s Harvest Farm is a well-structured and thorough program for men seeking faith-based treatment and life skills courses. All residents build community relationships, find jobs and eventually transition into permanent housing. While these programs are aimed primarily at homeless and similarly disenfranchised clients, Denver Rescue Mission Harvest Farm remains a valuable resource for those who qualify.
