Denver Inner City Parish Review
Since 1960, Denver Inner City Parish has provided a variety of human services to underprivileged families living in Denver, Colorado. This non-profit organization offers programs focused on issues such as hunger, education, economic development and community enhancement. Within these programs, adults are offered substance abuse and mental health support through Project Renew. DICP’s substance abuse treatment services include non-intensive outpatient group and individual therapy sessions.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at DICP is non-intensive, affordable and available to adults struggling with chemical dependency and mental health disorders. Before admission, clients must undergo an assessment to determine which treatment track suits their needs. If more intensive care is needed, then referrals to residential treatment facilities or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) can be made.
The outpatient program requires clients to attend one group session a week for 12 weeks. Group sessions are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 6 to 8 pm; clients are placed in a group that best fits their schedule. During group therapy, one of the four counselors leads sessions using an educational or discussion based approach. Topics focus on substance abuse education and relapse prevention, though anxiety, depression and stress management are also touched upon.
Aside from groups, adults are also offered individual sessions scheduled as needed. Typically each session lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. Though participation in 12-step programs is not mandatory, clients are highly encouraged to attend off site NA/AA meetings.
Staff members include CASACs who use evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT.
Extras
With an extensive list of services, clients of all ages have access to a range of programs. La Academia is an individualized middle school and high school experience with an average class size of 13 students. There are also highly affordable after-school and summer programs for elementary school kids. On the other hand, adults can get help earning a GED as well.
Community enhancement is also available through The College View Center which is operated by DICP. Services include Zumba classes, square dancing, Tae Kwon Do, senior bingo night, computer classes and teen nights. Additionally, seniors at DICP can take part in a social enhancement program aimed at reducing loneliness. Seniors are invited to share at least four meals together a week and are provided wellness education.
DICP also offers annual Holiday events like a family-style Thanksgiving Dinner served to over 1,000 people and the Christmas Gift Distribution. Other food services include a Food Bank that is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to noon.
