Deeper Roots Therapy Review
Melissa Elder is the founder of Deeper Roots Therapy, an outpatient eating disorder treatment facility in Charlotte, North Carolina. Using treatment methods rooted in non-diet approaches, Deeper Roots works with adolescents, women and men who struggle with a wide variety of eating disorders. However, the facility specializes in women over the age of 30. Treatment is available for anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, over exercising and more. Programming utilizes individual and group therapy along with EMDR.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Deeper Root is individualized. Clients can see their therapist in an individual setting up to several times per week, or attend group sessions. The therapists use a comprehensive approach with all their clients.
At the beginning of a client’s program at Deeper Roots, therapists explore their background with eating disorders and assess their psychological, emotional and physical state. Throughout treatment clients begin to address their emotional connection to food and develop coping skills.
The team here uses evidence-based approaches during treatment. This includes CBT, relational therapy, mindfulness, Health at Every Size, Intuitive Eating, and Mindful Eating. Staff works with their client’s physician to design a wellness plan, and works with dietitians.
Group therapy is broken down into a 10 session course. This course uses parts of The Art of Intentional Eating. This practice helps clients listen to their bodies as opposed to what society dictates in terms of what and how to eat. In addition to this group, there are also monthly non-diet groups and open community groups.
As previously mentioned, EMDR is readily available. This goes hand in hand with the eating disorder treatment as it also addresses past traumas.
The staff, which includes Melissa Elder, LCSW, is small with only three therapists in office. They are LCSWA, EMDR practitioner, and LPC. In conjunction with the eating disorder treatment, clients may also receive support for other addictions, like shopping, or gambling.
