Deaf Addiction Services at Maryland Review

Located on the grounds of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Deaf Addiction Services at Maryland (DASAM) offers specialized substance abuse and addiction services for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. The 71-acre complex is situated in West Baltimore near the Inner Harbor. The substance abuse treatment was accredited in 2000 and includes medical detox, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient care.

Treatment and Staff

An initial assessment determines the required level of care for clients at DASAM. Those in need of opioid or alcohol detox are accommodated in the psychiatric urgent care unit of the University of Maryland Hospital next door. These clients are able to participate in the outpatient programs concurrently with their treatment during the three to five days of detox.

Methadone and Suboxone maintenance is offered to clients with heroin addictions through the University of Maryland Hospital. Sign-language interpreters from the DASAM program accompany participants to physical examinations, nursing evaluations and individual counseling sessions.

IOP clients attend interpreted two-hour group therapy sessions daily for six to 12 weeks. The minimum requirement for this program is nine hours a week. How this time is divided up is determined by the client and their counselor, and may include addiction education, stress and anger management, individual counseling, group therapy, NA/AA meetings, specialized women and men’s groups and DUI counseling. Psychiatric evaluations are offered and clients with co-occurring disorders are supported through on-site medication management.

All staff is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). Additional interpreters are available to accompany clients to external appointments and sessions. The staff at DASAM includes two on-site addictions counselors, a licensed clinical addiction counselor, a mobile treatment counselor with a specialty in AIDS/HIV clients, and additional interpreters.

Extras

A mobile treatment team can travel to anywhere in the state of Maryland to offer treatment for clients who are not able to attend sessions at the Baltimore site. Mobile treatment includes assessment, case management and individual counseling with an ASL interpreter present.

In Summary

Deaf Addiction Services at Maryland offers valuable support for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals seeking recovery. While there are no inpatient programs offered, the IOP and outpatient programs provide comprehensive treatment options for clients who do not require hospitalization. In addition to their unique program, DASAM is able to offer complementary services with the University of Maryland Hospital located nearby. There is no cost for treatment, as those without insurance plans are provided free care through state grants.
