Portland OregonDe Paul Treatment Centers Outpatient Review

De Paul Treatment Centers provides detox, residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment to the residents of Portland, Oregon and surrounding areas. It offers adult outpatient treatment at its downtown Portland and Hillsboro locations and youth outpatient treatment at its northeast Portland and Hillsboro locations.

De Paul has three outpatient treatment tracks: Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or day treatment, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a standard outpatient program. Each program offers dual diagnosis support and encourages family engagement in treatment. Many of its residential clients continue treatment in De Paul’s outpatient programs. De Paul has been in operation since 1977 and has helped over 30,000 residents heal from addiction.

Treatment and Staff

Incoming clients have a full bio-psycho-social assessment. The average duration of outpatient treatment is three to five months, and clients often step down from the PHP to IOP and/or from the IOP to standard outpatient treatment. PHP clients attend group therapy from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm each weekday. IOP clients attend group therapy three to five evenings a week, and standard outpatient clients attend group therapy once or twice a week. All clients have individual therapy at least once a month.

The cornerstone of treatment at De Paul are its DBT groups. Additional groups include CBT skills, coping with anxiety, living with dual diagnosis and the CBT-based Matrix Model group, which is included in IOP and PHP treatment plans. There are also women’s groups available and classes that address life skills and spirituality.

The treatment team includes LMFTs, LPCs and consulting psychiatric nurse practitioners and psychiatrists for treating co-occurring disorders. De Paul also asks graduates to become peer mentors to current clients. The treatment team encourages clients to attend 12-step meetings or other peer support meetings.

Youth clients also participate in daily DBT groups and have access to a Stages of Change group, a Cannabis Youth Treatment group and groups on creating pro-social behaviors. Youth clients can also attend a weekly on-site closed AA meeting run by Portland’s Young People in AA.

Extras

For aftercare, clients can attend a weekly relapse prevention group. De Paul encourages families to take an active role in recovery. It runs a weekly Support Persons group and encourages clients to bring family members to counseling for family therapy. De Paul also facilitates families using the CRAFT program, a non-confrontational alternative to interventions, to overcome resistance to treatment.

In Summary

De Paul Treatment Centers have been serving Portland’s youth and adults for 40 years. Its outpatient programs are rich with varied evidence-based treatment groups that address communication, family relationships and living with mental health challenges. Its strong alumni program and aftercare groups ensure that clients have on-going support to continually nurture their lives in recovery.
