Experts in the addiction field often refer to alcoholism or drug abuse as a “brain disease.” As such, the multi-layered facets of addiction all stemming from the human mind must be treated. Crossroads at the David Lawrence Center in Naples, Florida is a 12-step, holistic treatment hybrid offering a myriad of services to treat the physical, psychological, social and spiritual components of addiction. This is one residential facility truly taking a comprehensive approach to healing the whole person.

Accommodations and Food

Crossroads is located on the pristine David Lawrence Center campus in Southwest Florida. Not far from the white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, the residential facility is clean, well maintained and newly renovated, complete with gardens, a screened-in pool (protection from Florida’s monstrous mosquito population) and a fitness court. There are 18 beds available, arranged in four same-sex rooms with four beds each. There is also one additional room with just two beds, designated for special circumstances only.

Good nutrition is essential to any truly holistic program and Crossroads adheres to that principal. Clients are given healthy options for meals every day. Choices are made to order and then served in the dining hall, family-style, on one of a series of round tables. In addition to the three formal meals, healthy snacks are available throughout the day. Hopefully this is more than enough, because outside food and drink are strictly prohibited.

Treatment and Staff

Detox is not only provided at Crossroads but is also its own self-sufficient program. Clients in detox are on a daily schedule of the standard medical monitoring as well as in 12-step meetings, yoga/Tai Chi, addiction education sessions and “structured recreation,” including group games, pet therapy and TV watching.

Clients entering the residential treatment program remain for 14 to 30 days. In keeping with its promise to treat the social, physical, spiritual and mental aspects of addiction, Crossroads implements a combination of 12-step recovery and group therapy with equine therapy, art therapy, nutritional counseling and fitness. Individual therapy is scheduled once a week. A standard day begins at 7 am and stays busy until 10 pm. Group sessions and recreational therapeutic activities make up the bulk of the day’s curriculum. The group therapy leaders assign individual homework at almost every meeting. The days’ beginning and end are always punctuated with forums to recap sobriety goals and achievements.

Every night after dinner, clients attend educational seminars and 12-step meetings. Meetings are held both on campus and off-site in the Naples community. The same goes for the twice-weekly yoga, a lot of which is led at an off-campus studio. Additional time is set aside every day for deliberate exercise whether it’s walking the eight-acre campus, lifting weights, playing basketball or swimming.

The family program at Crossroads includes loved ones over the age of 14. The sessions cover the following topics: The Disease Model of Addiction, Characteristics of Healthy Family Functioning and Taking Care of Yourself: Resources for Recovery.

Crossroads also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) counseling services as well as treatment designed specifically for pregnant women or new mothers dealing with substance abuse.

The team at Crossroads is an impressive lot—an eight-person clinical team of addiction counselors. The rest of the staff spills over from the David Lawrence Center at large and includes addictionologists, nutritionists, nurses, nurse practitioners, wellness experts, yoga teachers, licensed art therapists and psychiatrists

Extras

Two convenient extras on the Crossroads campus are the pool and the exercise facility, which includes a fitness court for basketball and tennis, a Ping Pong table and a games area. As mentioned, clients are given the opportunity to practice yoga, Tai Chi and meditation in addition to having pet, equine and art therapy.

In Summary

Crossroads has truly embraced the mind-body-spirit approach to recovery, supplementing its research-based treatment with a variety of experiential therapies and physical activity. Its association with a well-reputed behavioral health mecca, the David Lawrence Center, is all the more reason to consider treatment here; those with co-occurring disorders are well supported. The small number of patients, comfortable setting, variety of programming and well-equipped staff all make for a top level resource for those seeking drug or alcohol treatment.
