crescend-healthCrescend Health Phoenix House Review

Founded about 40 years ago in the picturesque beachside community of Santa Barbara, California, Crescend Health provides residential treatment for men and women suffering from mental health and substance abuse disorders. Its Phoenix House offers treatment for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

Located in downtown Santa Barbara, the Phoenix House is a cottage-style home that sits on a grassy lawn with a large tree that towers over the quaint residence. It has three single rooms for private pay clients and nine beds for state-funded residents who share double or triple-occupancy rooms.

The cuisine is standard American fare and residents are served three meals a day in the dining room. Snacks are also provided.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment so they may receive an individualized treatment plan. Detox is not provided, however, clients in need are referred to nearby facilities.

The weekly curriculum includes 20 hours of group and individual therapy, as well as educational classes that focus on life skills. Treatment employs evidence-based modalities, including CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and DBT. Traditional psychotherapy is used during individual sessions so that clients can connect with therapists in a more personal fashion. Groups address coping skills, anger management, relationship issues, relapse prevention, depression, anxiety, harm reduction and trauma. Treatment length is about 90 days, with the maximum stay being 18 months. A 12-step approach to recovery is not a part of treatment at Crescend Health.

Staff includes two Master’s-level LMFTs, a psychiatrist and licensed therapists. The staff-to-client ratio is two-to-one.

Extras

Crescend Health also offers an outpatient program for chemical dependency and dual diagnosis, which uses much of the same treatment methods as residential care but with a focus on harm reduction. In addition to CBT and DBT, therapists use Seeking Safety during individual and group sessions.

With the belief that personal and creative expression helps clients heal, journaling and art therapy are also a big part of the programs at Crescend Health.

In Summary

Crescend Health Phoenix House offers a nurturing environment and comprehensive services for people suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Eligible Santa Barbara residents receive state-funded treatment but even private pay clients will find the cost of its programs to be reasonable, making it a great and affordable option for both residential and outpatient care.
