Creedmoor Addiction Treatment Center has provided residential treatment services since 1974 to men and women struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. It is operated and certified by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), offering short-term treatment to adults living in the New York City borough of Queens.
Accommodations and Food
Adjacent to the Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital, the grounds of Creedmoor Addiction Treatment Center look more like a college campus than a treatment facility. Inside, the setting is comfortable and home-like. There are 26 beds and all rooms are double occupancy. Bathrooms are dorm-style at the end of the hall, with one for men and one for women. Rooms are full of natural sunlight and cozy décor, with draped windows and natural wood furniture. Each client has a twin bed, nightstand and dresser and clients share a closet. There is an entertainment room on the ground floor level with a TV and board games. Also located on the ground level are counseling offices, meeting rooms, the laundry room and the dining area.
Much like other rehab facilities, no cell phones or other electronic devices are allowed on the premises. There is no smoking anywhere on campus either, but nicotine patches are prescribed for those who need or want them. A novel requirement—clients must be able to climb stairs.
Three meals a day are served in the dining area. All food is prepared by licensed dietary staff at the adjacent psychiatric hospital and brought over to the treatment facility. Certain dietary requests can be accommodated as long as they are discussed upon admittance. Snacks are offered after lunch and dinner.
Treatment and Staff
Creedmoor Addiction Treatment Center is a 28-day residential program for men and women ages 18 and over. Potential clients must be free of all alcohol and drugs for a minimum of 48 hours prior to their assessment. The rehab doesn’t provide detox or any other acute medical services. Co-occurring disorders are addressed, but those with primary psychiatric issues cannot be admitted.
While treatment plans are individualized, the day starts for everyone with a 6 am wake up call and breakfast at 6:30. Residents have time for cleanup and everyone attends the morning group at 8 am. Topics include addiction studies, relapse prevention, coping skills, stress management and, if appropriate, anger management. Lunch is at noon and group and individual sessions resume after lunch. All sessions are 60-minutes in length. Specialty groups for women are held three days a week and are geared toward fostering a safe, nurturing and supportive environment. Topics include self-esteem, health and nutrition classes, and sexual and domestic violence. Clients have free time from 4 pm until dinner at 5:30. On-site meetings take place after dinner and include 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery and religious services. Visiting is once a month on the last Saturday of the month and visiting hours are from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
All treatment staff members are CSACs. Support technicians are on-site to ensure that all clients attend groups and scheduled activities. There is also a registered nurse on staff 24/7, making for a client-to-staff ratio of six-to-one.
What is called an extensive activities program offers recreational therapy in the form of karaoke, acupuncture, staff-supervised walks and yoga.
Creedmoor Addiction Treatment Center also offers services for homeless men, including a full array of medical services, referrals to continuing care and housing assistance, in addition to addiction treatment.
Creedmoor Addiction Treatment Center provides a straightforward 28-day residential treatment program for Queens, New York, residents. Accommodations are comfortable, specialty programming for women is part of the schedule and SMART Recovery is offered as an alternative to the 12 steps.
