San Diego CaliforniaCRASH Bill Dawson Residential Review

Community Resources and Self Help—know as CRASH—has been providing substance abuse and related services since 1970. A CARF accredited and community-based non-profit, CRASH provides several prevention, outpatient and residential treatment options for adults in San Diego County. In addition to these intensive substance abuse programs, CRASH offers community education and outreach services, as well as support for co-occurring disorders. The Bill Dawson residential treatment center was established in 1975 and serves both men and women in the same facility.

Accommodations and Food

Clients of the Bill Dawson treatment facility are accommodated on a floor of a larger building, in dual-occupancy rooms and dorms that are separated by gender. Bathrooms are shared, and all clinical services are offered on the same level. Furnishings and living areas meet basic needs, but little more. A cook prepares all food on-site and serves meals in the cafeteria. Additional snacks are always available.

Treatment and Staff

Clients may be referred to CRASH by individuals, medical professionals or organizations. An initial intake evaluation is required and determines the most suitable program for treatment. Though medically monitored detox services were offered in the past, clients requiring this level of supervision are now referred elsewhere, and are encouraged to enter a CRASH program once they are physically stable. New clients must also attend an orientation session that outlines program expectations, rules and requirements. This helps everyone understand his or her rights and responsibilities while in treatment.

The long-term program requires a minimum four-month commitment, with clients typically staying six months or longer. The holistic treatment programs integrate spiritual components with CBT  techniques, encouraging a community approach to healing. Men and women participate in groups and workshops together. Case managers and LADCs facilitate the bulk of treatment, with program coordinators and support staff offering assistance. A shift manager is always present during overnight hours, and volunteers perform many important services, such as clerical, administrative, fund-raising and planning.

Clients participate in their own recovery planning in individual counseling sessions that monitor progress toward recovery goals. Using a 12-step approach, clients also attend daily meetings, group counseling and problem-solving sessions, with weekly drug and alcohol education workshops. Many sessions focus on relapse prevention and building healthy communication techniques.

Extras

Vocational services, job readiness and life skills training assist with reentry to independent living. Additionally, clients participate in recreational activities like movie nights and group games that aim to develop socializing skills. For loved ones, family night and supervised visitations with children are organized.

Aftercare services include referrals to 12-step groups and community resources as well as regular check-in phone calls.

In Summary

The Bill Dawson Residential treatment facility offered by CRASH is a great choice for men and women serious about establishing a new way of living. The therapeutic options are basic but solid, and a good choice for those who need affordable treatment because nobody will be refused for inability to pay.
