Covenant HillsCovenant Hills Review

Covenant Hills Treatment Center is a women’s recovery facility in Boerne, Texas and as one might expect from the name, the program is heavily influenced by Christianity. While Covenant Hills takes great care to offer a traditional 12-step recovery track as well, its core concepts are based in Christian ideals of service. In addition to the company’s Texas location, it also has a sister facility, Pacific Hills Treatment Centers, based out of San Juan Capistrano, California.

Accommodations and Food

Set upon 28 acres about 35 miles north of San Antonio, Covenant Hills’ facility can hold a maximum of 12 women at a time in a large house with an expansive outdoor patio, all surrounded by rolling green hills. Covenant Hills provides large apartment-style rooms shared with one other roommate. Each comes with two twin beds, a living room, a kitchen area and a private bathroom. The interiors are comfortably decorated in yellow pastels with lots of natural light, making the house feel much like a welcoming bed and breakfast with only a few institutional touches.

An on-site chef prepares three meals a day, all of which are served in the facility’s dining area. While clients do have kitchen facilities in their rooms, they are not able to cook there; instead, they are taken to Wal-Mart once a week to buy snacks to store in their lodgings.

Treatment and Staff

There is no on-site detox at Covenant Hills, but it can facilitate one off-site. In fact, residents can actually check in at Covenant Hills first before being transported to and from a detox facility in the area. The facility also has a psychiatrist on staff who makes weekly visits to handle any issues with medication. There is a psychologist on-site every day who oversees day-to-day counseling and individual client issues; for any medical issues or emergencies, residents can be transported to the local hospital.

Covenant Hills specializes in the treatment of women struggling with co-occurring disorders and dual addictions. Clients have the option of choosing between their Christian program and AA‘s traditional Higher Power-oriented program but Covenant Hills does maintain the Big Book of AA is “squarely rooted in Biblical truth.” Their staff are all Christian, including licensed and ordained pastors and drug and alcohol counselors. While a resident’s stay includes therapy sessions, 12-step meetings and other traditional features of a rehab experience, the standout detail is an emphasis on restoring a connection with God.

Extras

Some bonuses of treatment at Covenant Hills include Gorski Relapse Prevention Therapy. Developed by Dr. Terence Gorski, a leading authority on recovery and relapse prevention, this method features a nine step relapse prevention process, which seeks to identify the lifestyle factors that could lead to relapse after a client’s stay is over. Family involvement is also heavily encouraged for this process. Finally, CrossFit classes are also offered to residents, and there is a large outdoor swimming pool available on the grounds.

In Summary

Those making their way to Covenant Hills must be prepared for a Christian-oriented recovery, as this foundation influences everything from the daily routine to the make-up of the staff. For those comfortable with these parameters, there is much to appreciate here— a small number of clients, individual care and apartment-style rooms. Those who long to develop or enrich their connection with God may well find themselves enjoying what Covenant Hills has to offer.
