Lewiston MaineThe Basics

Founded in 1888, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center has been providing general medical services in Lewiston, Maine for over 125 years. Over time, the hospital became a member of the Covenant Health Network, a non-profit health care group with facilities in Maine, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. Services have also expanded to include a substance abuse treatment program with three- to five-day inpatient detox as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which utilizes the 12-step modality as well as evidence-based methods such as CBT.

Treatment and Staff

The Saint Mary’s detox program accepts clients with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues. Once stable, clients may move into outpatient treatment by enrolling in the four-week IOP. Average attendance is four hours each day, four days a week (Monday through Thursday). All schedules are individualized and depend on each client’s level of need and life obligations. Treatment hours are between 9 am to 3:45 pm, with the co-occurring track ending at 1:45 pm. Evening sessions for both tracks are also available between 4 and 8 pm.

Clients enrolled in the IOP participate in substance abuse education, sobriety support and counseling through individual and group sessions. Emphasis is placed on healthy living and leisure activities, planning for relapse prevention and aftercare as well as developing coping skills. Group sessions range in focus from stress management to self-esteem improvement, interpersonal communication and family issues. There are also some spirituality groups available ro help clients connect to the idea of a Higher Power and help to process loss, grief and forgiveness.

The outpatient program employs a psychiatrist, registered nurses, a licensed staff of a clinical social worker, a Master’s-level counselor and a recreational therapist, as well as behavioral techs and a board-certified chaplain.

Extras

In an effort to provide a holistic approach to treatment and recovery, clients can also participate in music therapy. Family therapy is also scheduled on an individual basis to help develop a healthy support system.

In Summary

With a long history of supporting the Lewiston, Maine community, Saint Mary’s Medical Center’s services have evolved to include detox and an outpatient treatment program that treats both substance abuse and mental health disorders. Using evidence based treatment methods, alternative therapeutic methods and an introduction to spiritual recovery, this hospital-based program is a solid choice for those seeking a well-rounded IOP.
