Counseling for Change Review

Counseling for Change (CFC) was founded in Evansville, Indiana in 2002. The organization was CARF accredited in 2011 and offers outpatient treatment services to adult men and women in Vanderburgh County.

Treatment and Staff

When clients go through an intake appointment at CFC, the intake coordinator helps determine a payment plan and checks if the client is eligible for any potential grant monies. Clients then meet with a counselor for a formal assessment to help determine a potential treatment plan. Then when clients are ready to enter the program, they undergo an orientation session and finalize their treatment plan and begin therapy. Clients who are going though withdrawal or need a higher level of care are referred to outside detox and residential treatment programs.

CFC offers both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as a regular outpatient program. Both programs last for eight weeks and consist of both group and individual therapy. The IOP meets for group meetings three times a week while the outpatient program meets twice a week for group meetings. The group meetings vary greatly in the amount of clients per group and can range from eight to 18 clients at a time. The group meetings are focused on education, sharing and relapse prevention as well as evidence-based treatment protocols. Groups usually run about two hours and are offered at different times through the day beginning at 9:00am and ending at 7:00pm. Some counselors also utilize EMDR if they believe it would address the client’s individual needs. Individual meetings are available based on the needs of the clients. Clients are also randomly drug screened while in the program.

CFC’s counselors sometimes utilize the 12 steps and occasionally assign clients step work via worksheets and homework. Clients are strongly encouraged to attend outside AA and NA groups while in the program.

Although CFC is not dual diagnosis, counselors and staff can refer clients with potential co-occurring disorders to outside mental health therapists.

The counseling staff at CFC consist of a mixture of LCSWs and MSWs.

In Summary

Counseling for Change’s integration of the 12 steps into the outpatient programs allows clients who are new to sobriety to become accustomed to this type of treatment before becoming involved in outside AA and NA groups. CFC’s variety of group times also allows clients to create a treatment plan that works around personal and professional obligations. Additionally, CFC’s sliding scale makes it so people of all economic backgrounds have the opportunity to receive treatment.
