The Cottage Outpatient Center of San Luis Obispo, California, is part of the Cottage Hospital network. Cottage Hospital is based in Santa Barbara and has served the surrounding communities since 1891. The outpatient center provides psychiatry and addiction medicine services for those struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis. The outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) are evidence based with elements of the 12-step philosophy.
Treatment and Staff
The Cottage Outpatient IOP is broken down into three phases which lessen in intensity as the client moves through each phase. The first phase is five weeks of three-hour group sessions four nights a week. The second phase is two group sessions per week for eight weeks and the final stage, which is one group session per week, can last as long as the client feels they would like the support. Usually clients begin treatment in the IOP, but may move through the programs faster or slower, depending on their individual therapeutic needs.
The treatment combines elements of CBT, DBT, psychoeducation and the 12-steps. There is also a holistic side of treatment that is offered, and mindfulness based therapy techniques, like meditation and stress management, is also integrated into treatment. Groups cover topics like recognizing triggers and relapse prevention techniques, as well as specialty groups for those with a co-occurring disorders, offered with medication management and individual therapy are offered on a case by case basis. There are also gender specific groups offered at the facility for women. In addition to the treatment offered at the facility, clients are required to attend a minimum of two outside AA or NA meetings and obtain a sponsor during the initial phase of the program.
Cottage Hospital is a large facility and employs over 600 doctors. Included in this number are psychiatrists, psychologists, LPCs, addiction specialists, LPNs and medical doctors that work at the outpatient center.
Extras
Those who complete the first phases of treatment are offered free aftercare services in the form of once a week group therapy for as long as the client would like to participate. There is also multi family group therapy offering education, resources regarding medication management, and self help referrals, like Al-Anon.

The outpatient substance abuse offerings provide each individual a specialized, client-focused plan, with options for family members with the intention to give those in need the tools needed to return to their lives.
