Cortijo Care Marbella Review
Cortijo Care Marbella provides 12-step-based substance abuse treatment in the chic, sun-drenched southern Spain coastal town of Marbella. Prior to its current incarnation, the gorgeous villa served as a retirement home, but was fully renovated and updated in 2009. Addiction treatment, including medically-supervidsed detox services, are offered in both outpatient and residential formats. Further care options available at Cortijo include treatment for eating and psychiatric disorders as well as a general respite track offered to clients who have had recent surgery or an acute episode of illness.
Accommodations and Food
The Cortijo Care facility is located on 7,000 square feet of parkland, five minutes from the beach. The lush, manicured grounds include a gym and plenty of outdoor walking paths and reflection areas. Clients share a lounge with TV, as well as common rooms. Cortijo takes a maximum of 12 clients and each client gets a private room with a double bed, en-suite bath and television with international channels. Single-bed medical rooms are available for detox. All meals are prepared by an on-site gourmet chef and included in cost of stay. Dietary preferences and food allergies can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
At Cortijo Care there is a 28-day minimum for residential substance abuse services. Each client receives an individualized treatment plan. During their stay, they have a minimum of one individual session per week with a therapist and one with a psychiatrist. CBT-based group therapy is available every weekday, at various times throughout the day, and so are on-site 12-step meetings. Cortijo separates treatment in four stages: acute 24-hour care, rehabilitation, independent living and aftercare.
Stage one denotes intake and detox while stage two moves on to individual and group, educational lectures, nutrition classes, occupational, development, animal-assisted and art therapy. Stage three allows clients to move into a larger unit with its own kitchen and to prepare their own meals, as well as to take time off the premises, go shopping, attend off-site AA/NA meetings and meet family and friends for coffee. During this stage, clients may mentor stage two clients.
Outpatient treatment at Cortijo, also known as stage four, is only offered to clients who have completed the other phases of inpatient. Schedule and pricing are decided with the client’s psychiatrist and counselor. On average, clients have four group sessions per week and may gradually go down to one or none. They also have a weekly meeting with a therapist. Skype sessions allow clients to maintain the relationship with their therapist, long-distance.
Cortijo Care staff includes psychiatrists, medical doctors, psychotherapists, substance abuse counselors, family therapists, fitness trainers and 24-hour medical and psychiatric nursing care. The team is comprised of professionals trained in Spain and those who come from the UK, as the facility is British-owned. Services are available in a variety of languages, including English.
Extras
Clients are also encouraged to take part in daily physical and spiritual activity. Structured yoga, bike riding, Pilates and meditation are available Mondays through Fridays. While these activities are also available on Saturdays and Sundays, clients can use their weekends to visit the nearby town if they decide to do so as a group. Massages are available on-site at Cortijo for an extra cost.

While the concept of going overseas for treatment may seem daunting to those considering Cortijo, a change in environment—especially one as beautiful as Marbella—may be the helping hand needed to find and maintain sobriety.
