Cornerstone of Southern California Residential Review
Since 1984 Cornerstone of Southern California in Orange County has offered detox and residential treatment services that are individualized and based in the 12 steps, education and CBT. The client-focused programs include individual and group therapy, and aim to treat the whole person.
Accommodations and Food
There are 20 residences that are designated for inpatient programming located throughout Tustin and Orange in Southern California. These facilities are based in homes that can accommodate about six clients per residence, who share bedrooms with one other person, and maintain two bathrooms per house on average. Each home has a TV, Wi-Fi throughout, a large living room, dining room and kitchen where clients prepare their own meals. Ingredients are chosen by the individual and provided by the facility. There is also an on-site washer and dryer in every house and guests are required to maintain their own laundry, though detergent and all cleaning items are supplied by Cornerstone.
Treatment and Staff
The heart of treatment provided at Cornerstone is education based with evidence-based modalities. There is no “set” treatment program or amount of time clients must spend at the facility, though typically if a client is going into a residential program, 90 days is a standard stay. There are specialized groups for gender-specific issues, relapse prevention and co-occurring disorders. There are also psychoeducational seminars and on and off-site AA and NA meetings weekly. Individual therapy sessions are offered on a regular basis along with life skills classes, like resume building, cooking and interviewing practice.
For clients who enter into treatment with an existing dual diagnosis there are medication management services, as well as more holistic options as far as treatment goes, which may involve art or music therapy. There are also programs available to those who are court ordered to participate in treatment.
There are about 70 staff members serving clients at all the Cornerstone locations, including 24 hour a day residential staff, psychiatrists, addictions specialists, case managers and music therapists.
Extras
There are frequent activities like beach trips, movie nights and bowling scheduled weekly, and exercise is integrated into treatment, including a complimentary Gold’s Gym membership and regular yoga sessions. There are also events centered on the home, like barbecues and other sober gatherings.
In addition to substance abuse programs, Cornerstone also offers gambling, exercise, food and sex addiction treatment. There are family nights twice a month, and a family program, which is eight weeks of group therapy and offers insights into self-help groups, like Alanon. There are free aftercare services for clients and family members of clients who have completed the program, and sober living referrals.
In Summary
There are programs that claim to be individualized, and then there are programs that actually are. Cornerstone falls into the latter category. There is no hard sell when it comes to the program that works best for the individual and the staff will work with whatever feels right and will suit the client best.
