Cornerstone Recovery CenterCornerstone Recovery Center Review

Cornerstone Recovery Center is a relatively new organization in comparison to some of its more veteran southern Florida counterparts. Founded in 2012 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, it offers both a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) as well as outpatient treatment for adult men and women.

Accommodations and Food

Clients in Cornerstone’s PHP live in apartment buildings only a couple minutes away from the treatment center. All of the apartments are one-bedroom with two clients living in each unit. Although the apartments have the capacity to hold up to 40 clients, Cornerstone usually only has 12 to 17 residents living in the building at a time. Each bedroom comes equipped with the twin beds, full bedding, a nightstand and dresser.

Each apartment has a living room with a TV and couch, a full kitchen with a small table and a patio area with chairs. The complex itself also has a pool with lawn chairs that clients use regularly. The apartment building is also very close to the ocean, and Cornerstone provides fishing rods and supplies for clients.

Clients are responsible for the buying and preparing their own food. Each week, clients are provided with a $70 gift card to a local grocery store that clients and staff visit every Friday afternoon. Staff members help clients make healthy choices at the grocery store and teach clients how to budget out money to buy enough food for the week.

Staff members also teach clients recipes and can assist them with cooking. Cornerstone provides a catered lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays as well as a home cooked dinner catered on Sundays

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Cornerstone begins with an initial meeting with the organization’s Medical Director and Clinical Director. The goal of this meeting is to determine the client’s level of need and assign him or her to the appropriate treatment program at Cornerstone. If clients need a higher level of care than Cornerstone can provide, they are referred to an outside residential or detox program.

The PHP offers 30-, 60- and 90-day programs. The therapy consists of both group and individual counseling. Clients in this program are usually in therapy from 9am to 2pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and only half days on Wednesdays and Fridays. Counselors use a variety of treatment techniques including EMDR, relapse prevention, trauma therapy and gender-specific therapy. The group meetings are led by one counselor and consist of roughly 10 clients per group. Clients also have individual meetings throughout the week as well.

The weekends are a lot less intensive, but clients also have an interactive group on Saturday mornings and social skills group Sunday afternoons.

When clients finish with the PHP, they can step down to Cornerstone’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Cornerstone offers both a daytime and evening IOP, with the evening program designed for clients who have jobs during the day. It consists of both group and individual therapy. The intensity and length of this program is based on the needs of the client, and varies from meeting three to five days a week. The group therapy is very similar to that of the PHP and there is occasionally some overlap between PHP and IOP group meetings. Counselors in the IOP utilize SMART Recovery and believe it helps clients learn how to lead healthy and productive lives.

Although, the IOP is not 12-step based, the counselors strongly encourage clients to attend outside 12-step meetings to compliment the SMART Recovery treatment.

The group sizes in the IOP are roughly six to 12 clients. Also, clients entering this program from the PHP are encouraged to live at local sober living houses.

Upon completion of the IOP, clients can transition into Cornerstone’s outpatient program. This program consists of both group and individual therapy, and is almost identical to that of the IOP with the exception that clients in this program almost meet once or twice a week.

All of Cornerstone’s programs are dual diagnosis, and clients with potential co-occurring disorders are referred to the organization’s mental heath department. Cornerstone also offers a co-occurring program specifically for clients with both mental health and substance abuse issues.

The staff is a mixture of both medical professionals and therapists including, a MD, RD, MSWs, LPN, LCSW and other certified addiction specialists.

Extras

Clients in the PHP have group recreational activities on Wednesday and Friday afternoons that includes such activities as going to the movies and bowling. All of Cornerstone’s programs also include occasional holistic treatment options including acupuncture, yoga and massages.

The organization also offers court liaison services to clients who have pending legal issues.

Cornerstone runs a family night every other Friday for family members and clients to discuss substance abuse issues. Counselors can also provide individual counseling with the client and their family member if the client requests it.

Clients who have completed any of Cornerstone’s treatment programs have the option of stepping down to the organization’s aftercare program. Clients in this program occasionally meet with counselors or therapists and receive assistance from their case manager with job and housing issues. Clients in this program are encouraged to attend outside AA and NA meetings as well find a sponsor.

Cornerstone also operates a highly active alumni network that connects clients all across the country.

In Summary

Cornerstone Recovery Center is a highly comprehensive and individualized substance abuse treatment organization. The high quality of the living environment in the PHP provides clients with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a healthy lifestyle while in treatment. The flexibility in the IOP allows clients an outpatient option that totally fits their needs and schedule. Also, the aftercare and alumni network allows clients to transition out of the program smoothly and with confidence.
