COPE CenterCOPE Center Review

Since 1973, the Chautauqua Offices of Psychotherapy and Evaluation, commonly referred to as the COPE Center, has been providing outpatient substance abuse treatment in the Florida Panhandle. Operating as a  non-profit, the COPE Center offers services in two locations. Its main facility is in Defuniak Springs, with an additional location beachside in Destin about 35 miles away.

Treatment

COPE Center clients receive individualized treatment plans seven to 10 days after an hour-long intake interview with a therapist. Dual diagnosis support is offered at the recommendation of the therapist. Detox is not available on-site, but referrals are made, if needed. Substance abuse group and individual therapy are conducted at both the Defuniak Springs and Destin locations. Day and evening sessions are available.

The COPE Center’s substance abuse programs are divided into levels corresponding to stages of recovery. Level One is treatment engagement, where clients are introduced to the disease model of addiction through educational material and given an introduction to the concepts of AA/NA. Level Two is the early recovery phase for those who have completed Level One, but have been abstinent less than 90 days. Topics at this stage focus on developing healthy habits and dealing with the issues that caused the substance abuse. Level Three is the maintenance stage; at this point, clients discuss relapse prevention and coping skills for continuing recovery. Programs vary in length depending on the individual, but the average person will advance through all three levels in four to six months.

Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) groups are available for all three levels. Therapists run group sessions that never exceed 15 people, though they often have only three or four. To make treatment accessible to everyone, both programs offer day or evening groups. Outpatient meets two hours a week and the IOP is available twice a week for two-hour sessions. Individual talk therapy sessions are scheduled for clients in both programs, as needed. Specialty groups are available for teens and those with co-occurring disorders.

Intake and evaluation costs between $3 and $150, with group sessions between $3 and $57 per session. The staff includes therapists and licensed substance abuse counselors.

Extras

COPE also offers Employment Assistance Programs (EAPs), which are employer-sponsored efforts to maintain the health and well-being of employees. The EAP professional engages in one-on-one sessions with employees to address workplace and personal issues before they escalate.

In Summary

At the COPE Center, flexible schedules and multiple locations make outpatient treatment easy to fit into any schedule. The small group sizes ensure that individuals get the kind of personalized treatment that may not be possible at busier facilities. For the low cost, the COPE Center is an excellent recovery resource.
