Connecticut Junior RepublicConnecticut Junior Republic Review

With a history dating back to 1904, Connecticut Junior Republic is a nonprofit that provides behavioral health and educational services to adolescents. The organization has 12 distinct locations throughout the state including Danbury, East Hartford, Litchfield, Middletown, New Haven, Torrington, Waterbury, Winchester and two each in New Britain and Rockville/Manchester. Though Connecticut Junior Republic offers a plethora of different services and programs at each of its locations, their outpatient substance abuse services are provided at the facility in Waterbury.

Treatment and Staff

Connecticut Junior Republic at Waterbury, which receives funding from the Department of Children and Families (DCF), is called the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach/Assertive Continuing Care program (A-CRA/ACC). The Waterbury facility serves those living in Torrington and Danbury as well. Clients participating in A-CRA/ACC can be either self-referred or court-appointed. The facility is accredited as a Level I substance abuse program. Those in need of a more comprehensive program can typically be referred to an inpatient facility during their initial evaluation. Detox must also be completed off-site before enrolling.

After the initial evaluation, the first phase of Connecticut Junior Republic’s program features one hour-long individual therapy session a week for a total of 12 sessions. Treatment is CBT-oriented and include a focus on the Stages of Change model. There are also sessions that focus on life skills, anger management and trauma-informed care. The staff for these sessions are Master’s-level clinicians. There are no group therapy sessions offered at the facility and while 12-step recovery is encouraged, it is not required.

Dual-diagnosis support is also available as clients can address co-occurring disorders during therapy. Those in need of more comprehensive mental health care can participate in another of Connecticut Junior Republic’s programs at the Wellness Center, which is a more comprehensive family-oriented facility with visits from on-staff psychiatrists and LPCs. Medication management is also available.

Extras

After three months, clients move to the second phase of treatment which is the aftercare program, with case management-oriented individual sessions on a weekly basis. These sessions can be conducted in various off-site locations as needed, such as a school or a coffee shop. Generally, these sessions focus on developing job skills, helping clients seek employment and learning relapse prevention strategies.

In addition to A-CRA/ACC and the Wellness Center program, Connecticut Junior Republic’s Waterbury location also offers a Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) track, a family program that features in-home counseling and examines how substance abuse affects the entire family. Clients can expect three in-home sessions a week for a 12-month period, though the length of treatment can be adjusted as needed.

In Summary

Connecticut Junior Republic is a vast and distinguished organization with many locations and programs. Still, its most intensive option for substance abuse is the A-CRA/ACC program for adolescents, which offers evidence-based therapy and dual diagnosis support. Clients can expect highly individualized programs that stress family involvement. In all, Connecticut Junior Republic is a strong resource for families throughout Connecticut.
