Concord HospitalConcord Hospital Review

Concord Hospital is a non-profit healthcare organization that has been serving New Hampshire since 1981. Among its plethora of healthcare services, it offers outpatient substance abuse treatment through its behavioral health department. Concord provides an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) known as “Fresh Start” that accepts clients of 17 years of age or older, as well as an aftercare program, with continuing care groups for clients who complete the IOP. Concord uses CBT but not a 12-step format nor does it provide detox.

Treatment and Staff

Concord’s Fresh Start IOP program begins with individualized assessments and psychological consultations. Those who need treatment for co-occurring disorders are referred to an outside psychiatrist who can provide treatment and medication. IOP runs four evenings a week for 30 days. It is an intensive, structured program that averages 16 sessions in three hour segments, four times per week and one one-and-a-half hour session on Tuesdays for family and friends. Loved ones’ involvement varies based on each client’s needs. The standard family group meets on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Group topics include drug and alcohol education, coping skills and relapse prevention.

Once a client completes IOP, he or she enters the aftercare program which is also offered on an outpatient basis. Clients attend group once a week over a period of 10 weeks. Men’s group runs on Tuesdays, from 4 to 5:15 pm and women’s group runs Wednesdays from 4 to 5:15 pm. All groups meet on the fifth floor at Concord Hospital.

Fresh Start employs a number of CADCs and LCSWs.

Extras

Concord offers a substance use awareness program which is a short-term group that provides education to those at risk of substance abuse. Concord is also an impaired driving service provider that is approved the state of New Hampshire and can provide impaired driver case management for license reinstatement. Evaluations for court ordered or other mandated substance use assessments can be offered as is individual counseling at clients’ request, though it is not a default part of the Concord IOP.

In Summary

With over three decades of experience in healthcare, Concord Hospital is a well established organization. The Fresh Start IOP is comparable to other IOP programs. What may be the deciding factor is that Concord does not follow a 12-step modality, thus making it more appealing to those who want to avoid that route. However, note that the IOP and aftercare programs come as a package. Deciding to visit Concord Hospital for treatment means being ready to commit to the total 14 weeks.
