Concept HouseThe Basics

Founded in 1970 in Miami, Florida, Concept House is a non-profit social service agency that provides residential treatment, transitional care and sober living for adults and adolescents dealing with chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders.

Accommodations and Food

At Concept House, the co-ed adult inpatient  program has a 15-bed capacity. Clients live in a residential wing of the main building. Dorm-style, gender-specific rooms accommodate two clients each. Residents are served three hot meals daily. The food follows nutritional guidelines and is low on carbs. A typical day might consist of scrambled eggs and sausage for breakfast, spinach wrap for lunch and tilapia or shrimp scampi for dinner. Concept House stresses that it is a non-smoking facility and provides smoking cessation classes for those who didn’t kick the habit prior to going into rehab.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment length depends on a client’s growth in the program. Clients receive individualized treatment plans. Every 30 days, clients meet with case managers for a progress report. Concept House is not a medical facility, and those requiring detox are provided with medical referrals.

Concept House employs evidence-based methods, including CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), which is a form of Motivational Interviewing (MI). Weekly treatment includes individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, educational classes, and on-site 12-step meetings. Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, spirituality, triggers, healthy relationships, coping skills, co-occurring disorders and support mechanisms. Classes focus on HIV/STD/AIDS education and prevention. Additionally, clients must get a sponsor and work their steps.

A typical day at Concept House means getting up at 6 am, followed by breakfast and a yoga/meditation group from 9 am to 10:30 am. After that, there is group therapy, followed by lunch. The afternoon schedule may include individual therapy, group therapy, meditation, 12-step meetings, dinner, followed by another meeting and free time between 8 and 9 pm. Lights out is 10:30 pm. Residents are given free time to meet with their sponsors on Saturdays.

Staff members at Concept House include Master’s-level social workers, CADCs, case managers and the program director.

Extras

Clients are taught basic life skills, time management, and career preparation which includes resume writing, interview skills and proper grooming.

In Summary

At Concept House, the program is highly structured with around-the-clock supervision. This is a great program for clients who want an affordable, no-nonsense approach to recovery in beautiful Miami. For those who want a little more down time, alternative therapies and perhaps a few massages in their recovery protocol, this rehab might not be the right match.

If your adolescent suffers from a mental health illness/drug dependency problem, DO NOT send them to Concept House. Concept House is a place where your child will go and feel like they are a burden, they are worthless, where they are left to figure their problems out on their own. Concept House does not like parents who are involved, who ask questions, who advocate for their children. When they realize that the parent/child are asking questions that will lead to Concept House staff doing actual work, they will blacklist your child. The therapist, Sheena Goldhagen, is dangerous – she calls the girls names, she lies to the children, parents and the staff at Concept House. Weekly one-on-one therapy turns into 1 one-on-one every two to three weeks. The staff call the girls names, steal their snacks, treat the girls in a very demeaning manner. The building is infested with roaches and mice (rats). The food that is catered has been delivered/served with moldy bread. This is a 5-bed facility (one side for girls and one side for boys). On one given night, there was one girl Baker acted and 3 girls who ran away – ALL ON ONE NIGHT. Where is the security? When I questioned Sheena about the precautions put in place after my daughter ran away, she said there were no precautions put in place because if she or the other girls want to run away, they can go. When my daughter was claiming to be suicidal, they called me to pick her up and take her to the hospital. Sheena told me that neither she or Rhonda Latham, the director, could call 911. I told Sheena I can call 911 on a complete stranger if they claimed to be suicidal. After realizing they were not going to call 911 for my daughter, I drove 40 minutes and found that both Sheena and Rhonda left; how can staff and administration leave when there is a child claiming to want to kill themself? Especially after they had a young boy actually hang himself a couple of years ago…protocols are not followed, rules change whenever Sheena and Rhonda want to change them (i.e., no consistency), confidential information is disclosed by Sheena to the other girls. There is so much more to say that will be disclosed in a much larger forum. But please, whatever you do, DO NOT send your children to Concept House. They will come out much worse than when they entered.
