Comprehensive Behavioral Health CenterComprehensive Behavioral Health Center Review

Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center (CBHC) was founded in 1957 to provide mental health and rehabilitative services to the residents of East St. Louis, Illinois. This small city is across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri, on Illinois’ southern border. The facility’s outpatient services grew with the de-institutionalization of mental health patients in the 1960s, and began offering substance abuse treatment in 1982. CBHC’s programs include residential treatment, outpatient programs and transitional care.

Accommodations and Food

The residential treatment unit occupies one floor of CBHC’s sprawling treatment facility on 8th Street, near Highway 55. Residents stay in treatment anywhere from seven to 30 days and those needing to detox are sent to an affiliated hospital clinic nearby prior to beginning treatment.

There are 26 beds in the residence, and women and men are housed on opposite sides of the floor. Residents each have a roommate. The rooms feature twin beds, dressers and desks, and each room has its own bathroom. Residents can watch television and read in the unit’s Group Activity Room. While there is no exercise facility, residents are taken on supervised walks outside for recreation and exercise.

Standard cafeteria meals are catered by the facility. Residents are not allowed cell phones or computers. The program doesn’t have visiting hours, but clients can use the unit phone to call home. Residents also have access to the unit’s laundry facility free of charge.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admission, clients are given a treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy. Residents attend several groups each day and have individual therapy as needed. Counselors use CBT and the 12-step framework. On Mondays, residents attend an evening class on working the 12 steps, and on Thursday nights they’re encouraged to attend an on-site NA meeting. Clients with co-occurring disorders are able to access CBHC’s behavioral health unit treatment team for therapy and medication. In addition to recreational activities, clients can participate in art therapy after they’ve completed their group and individual therapy schedule for the day.

Therapy groups are led by addiction counselors with CADC credentials. In the evenings, the facility is staffed by nurses, security staff and medical technicians.

Extras

CBHC work closely with residents to create an effective aftercare plan. It offers referrals to outpatient programs and sober living facilities. It also helps court-mandated clients navigate legal aid and will summarize clients’ treatment progress for outside therapists, agencies and parole officers.

In Summary

Comprehensive Behavioral Health Center’s residential program offers short-term inpatient care designed to lay a foundation for sobriety and lifestyle changes. By providing therapy and 12-step education and connecting clients with community agencies, legal resources and additional treatment options, CBHC ensures that clients complete treatment knowing how to take productive next steps in all areas of their recovery.
