Orange City IowaCompass Pointe Behavioral Health Services Review

Compass Pointe Behavioral Health Services opened in 1969 in Orange City, Iowa. Over time, the organization has expanded to nine offices, all offering outpatient treatment for substance abuse issues using 12-step based services in Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Sioux, and Kossuth Counties. Compass Pointe offers counseling and alcohol and drug education in three levels of treatment: an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), extended outpatient, and continuing care all incorporating individual, family and group therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Clients at Compass Pointe begin by meeting with a counselor for an evaluation that determines their individualized treatment plan and schedule. Typically, IOP clients attend group sessions three nights a week for three hours per night. Clients also meet with their individual counselor for a one-on-one session and are introduced to the AA/NA principles.

Compass Pointe also offers a juvenile IOP out of the Hull office for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18. Clients take part in a minimum of nine hours of educative lectures, films, discussions, and group sessions each week and must attend off-site 12-step groups. Family members of young people in the JIOP also take part in education and therapy groups.

Extended outpatient treatment includes two 90-minute evening groups each week and also requires a weekly one hour individual session. This track functions as a step down from the IOP.

Compass Pointe offices are staffed by one to three licensed substance abuse counselors.

Extras

Compass Pointe additionally offers faith-based counseling (out of Orange City and Hull), as well as a Hispanic Group in which volunteers assist group members with spiritual matters and education on nutrition and budgeting. Participants are also introduced to Spanish-language AA/NA groups. The Hispanic Group is a nine-week course which extends in Hispanic aftercare of one group session, once a month.

Clients who have completed the IOP can also benefit from aftercare to aid clients in transitioning from treatment to ongoing recovery with up to two hours of group sessions per week. Additionally, Compass Pointe offers a gambling recovering program and Talking About Alcohol/Drugs and DUI Classes.

In Summary

After almost 50 years in operation, Compass Pointe Behavioral Health Services is a good option for those looking for basic outpatient services or an IOP. By combining evidence-based treatment and the 12-steps, treatment programs at Compass Pointe are a solid option with a network of facilities across the state.
