Compass Point has been providing prevention, intervention and treatment services for those struggling with addiction in the Northern Black Hills of South Dakota since 1973. Compass Point is accredited by the South Dakota Department of Social Services, Division of Community Behavioral Health and Department of Health. The philosophy at Compass Point is that every individual has the right to be treated with dignity and respect and clients receive treatment that correlates to that ideal. Compass Point offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and outpatient treatment, along with inpatient treatment, detox and help with co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment begins with a screening and an assessment, which informs the staff of each client’s acuity and recovery needs, allowing them to create an individualized treatment plan. If a client requires detox services, he or she is referred to an appropriate facility. The IOP at Compass Point includes traditional therapy, both individual and group, scheduled several times a week Monday through Friday. There is also a family component and the client’s family is encouraged to participate in educational classes to inform them about the disease of addiction and invited to attend therapy with the client. Attendance of 12-step meetings is also encouraged as are Alanon meetings for family members.
The basic outpatient track is similar to the IOP but with fewer sessions and a shorter duration of treatment as determined by both the client’s needs and their rate of recovery, but is usually around 30 days.
In addition to education programs such as relapse prevention, Compass Point also provides Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) classes. Aftercare is also available in the form of community prevention activities and continued 12-step meetings and support groups.
Compass Point offers a variety of tracks to meet each client’s unique recovery needs. Understanding that addiction affects more than just the client, Compass Point also strives to include families in the therapeutic process as well as educational opportunities, which help create a strong support system for the client post-treatment. Approximately 60% of the staff at Compass Point are currently in recovery themselves, so the ideals of compassion and respect are upheld through their personal experience making Compass Point a good choice for those seeking a recovery community to help sustain lasting wellness.
