Bellingham WashingtonCompass Health Review

Since 1901, Compass Health has provided community healthcare services in western Washington state. Offering mental health and substance abuse treatment since 1953, Compass now provides a range of outpatient programs for youth and adults at multiple locations in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan Counties.

Treatment and Staff

Comprehensive substance abuse assessments are performed to determine specific needs, and individualized treatment plans created. These include tailored treatment modalities, length and medical services. Created using guidelines suggested by the American Society of Addiction Medicine, treatment plans vary in length and frequency. All clients receive case management, as well as random urinalysis screening. Services extend through the Orcas Islands and are available to anyone that lives in San Juan County. Limited services are offered in Whatcom and Skagit.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is recommended for clients who are able to attend to daily responsibilities like parenting, work or school, while seeking treatment for substance abuse. It is the highest level of care at Compass, and meets up to three days a week. Each session consists of group therapy and education classes. Groups focus on relapse prevention, life skills training and teaching clients communication skills. The goal is to learn to avoid situations that may trigger relapse, and to build healthy relationships. Individual counseling is also provided, with clients meeting their clinical team weekly.

The outpatient program is similar to the IOP, and is suitable for clients that have completed a higher level of treatment. By attending one or two times a week, clients can ease the transition back to independent living. Clients will begin treatment attending at a greater frequency, gradually reducing to once a month. Group and individual counseling comprise the bulk of treatment, with education services optional.

Those with substance-related legal matters can utilize the DUI assessment services. Compass outpatient programs meet requirements determined by the state for DUI treatment and deferred sentencing. For clients with co-occurring disorders, individual therapy utilizes DBT. While medication management is not offered, clients have access to a network of mental and physical healthcare services through Compass. The staff is made up of state-certified chemical dependency professionals and some services are available in Spanish.

Extras

All are eligible for aftercare planning, which includes bi-monthly calls made by Compass staff to check on the client’s progress. Continued access to Compass services, including anger management classes, is an added benefit of the programs.

Compass Health also offers Camp Mariposa, a free weekend overnight camp for nine to 12 year olds that are affected by addiction in their families. Camp programs are offered multiple times a year and led by mental health and chemical dependency professionals who provide educational and therapeutic support services in a fun, traditional camp setting.

In Summary

Compass Health substance abuse services are a useful resource for residents of San Juan County. Providing a range of options for youth and adults, the outpatient and complimentary services are great for those transitioning from higher-level care. Clients must have insurance to cover the cost of treatment. In some cases, grants may be used to assist clients without coverage, with the outstanding amount determined by a sliding scale based on income.
