The Basics

Community Renewal Team is a Hartford, Connecticut-based network of behavioral health and wellness facilities that provide outpatient, Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization (PHP) mental health and substance abuse recovery programs throughout the state. Since incorporating under the banner of Community Renewal Team of Greater Hartford in 1963, CRT has become Connecticut’s largest nonprofit human-services agency, serving more than 130,000 people each year.

Treatment and Staff

The appropriate treatment for each client is determined through an initial intake process and medical and mental health examination. There are three levels of mental health and substance abuse counseling: outpatient, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization. Clients are required to start with partial hospitalization or intensive outpatient before going to the regular outpatient level.

Partial hospitalization consists of a combination of group and individual counseling four days a week for four hours a day. Intensive outpatient meets three days a week for three hours a day. Outpatient clients are seen once or twice a week for one hour each time. Group sessions run from 9 am to 12:30 pm three times a week, and clients are expected to participate in discussions and activities. Groups are never more than 12 clients.

Counseling lasts from one to three-and-a-half hours and covers all aspects of substance abuse. Trauma, loss and other life experiences that can lead to substance abuse, in addition to depression and self-image, are addressed. A discharge plan and referrals to community services are discussed throughout treatment.

Detox is not offered, but Community Renewal makes referrals. The facility provide on-site dual diagnosis support for co-occurring disorders.

The staff at CRT is comprised of licensed clinical social workers,  psychiatrists and PhD or Master’s-level medical professionals specializing in partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatments and services. There are also medication managers and psychologists on staff. The staff-to-client ratio at CRT is one-to-four.

CRT is 12-step affiliated, but meetings do not take place at the facility. Instead, clients are referred to convenient locations.

Extras

Family counseling sessions are available by arrangement with a primary counselor and case manager.
