Community Psychiatric InstituteCommunity Psychiatric Institute Review

Community Psychiatric Institute (CPI) was founded in 1972 in East Orange, New Jersey, a small town less than 20 miles west of Manhattan. The facility provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at CPI begins with an in-person assessment with one of its counselors. If they determine the client is a good fit for CPI’s services, then he or she must apply for Medicaid to cover the cost of the program as it does not accept private insurance or self-pay. Clients who are in need of a higher level of care are referred to outside residential or detox programs in the area.

CPI’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) consists of both group and individual therapy. The program meets Monday through Friday from 9 am to 3 pm, and the length is flexible with clients being able continue in treatment as long as they need. CPI can also design a lower intensity program if necessary.

The groups usually consist of 16 to 20 clients and are led by one counselor. The meetings focus on a number of different treatment techniques and topics including Seeking Safety, the 12 steps, relapse prevention, social skill development, the Matrix Model of recovery as well as a wellness and recovery action plan. Counselors also occasionally use music and art therapy.

CPI provides dual diagnosis support and clients with potential co-occurring disorders meet with mental health counselors regularly and have a check up with a psychiatrist once every three months. There is also assistance with medication management. Community is affiliated with a local physician group that provides on-site physical health evaluations and testing.

The staff at Community Psychiatric Institute consists of a mixture of LCSWs, CSWs, CADCs, mental health counselors, nurses and a medical director.

Extras

Clients in the IOP are provided breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout the day. When clients arrive in the morning they are served a hot breakfast provided by an on-site cooking staff. For lunch, clients are presented with two options, usually one vegetarian and one meat.

The facility also offers transportation via van to and from the outpatient program each day. The organization has six vans and can transport up to 80 clients per day.

CPI also offers private family groups with a counselor, client and client’s family members. The client must consent to these meetings beforehand.

In Summary

Community Psychiatric Institute is a comprehensive and long-term outpatient treatment option for anyone struggling with addiction and alcoholism in the East Orange area. The regular medical check-ups and tests are an added benefit that provide the convenience of private medical care within the framework of a behavioral health program. The transportation program allows men and women without access to a car the ability to regularly attend treatment. Also, the variety of treatment techniques allows counselors to find the best approach to deal with each client’s individual needs.
