Community Programs IncCommunity Programs Inc. Review

Community Programs Inc. was founded in 1968 in Waterford, Michigan, roughly 30 miles northwest of Detroit. Community Programs is accredited by CARF and licensed by the state of Michigan. Today the organization offers a variety of behavioral health treatment options including residential, outpatient and detox services for adult men and women in Oakland County.

Accommodations and Food

The facility is a large one-story building and houses a total of 40 beds designated for males and 30 beds designated for females. Although men and women are housed in separate wings of the building, they do attend group therapy together. Each bedroom has three to five twin beds and a small closet space.

Community Programs has a cooking staff who prepares three meals a day for the clients. The staff can accommodate dietary restrictions or needs, however clients must show proof of these restrictions ahead of time. Clients are allowed to bring in their own food and drink, but are not allowed to bring in any items with caffeine or chocolate.

The building also has a main living area with couches and TVs as well as a kitchenette area for snacks. Cigarettes and smoking is allowed, but clients are not permitted to bring in any non-factory made cigarettes or rolling tobacco. Also, jewelry, blow dryers and any non-AA or non-religious books are not allowed.

Treatment and Staff

Substance abuse clients must receive a referral from the Oakland County Department of Mental Health in order to be eligible for Community Programs’ residential, detox or outpatient programs. After receiving this assessment, clients undergo an intake meeting with a counselor at Community Programs to help determine what program fits them best.

If clients are not sober or experiencing withdrawal symptoms, they are referred to Community Programs detox program. The detox lasts from three to seven days and clients receive a high level of individualized attention from the counselors and medical staff during this time.

Community Program’s short-term residential program lasts for 14 days and consists of both group and individual counseling. Clients have two group meetings per day as well as a variety of lectures and presentations. The groups vary in size and place a large focus on using CBT to help clients identify and change their negative thought patterns and behaviors. The lectures focus on substance abuse education and relapse prevention. The program does not use the 12 steps at all. Clients have at least one individual meeting per week.

Community Programs is dual diagnosis, and has a doctor on staff who treats clients with co-occurring disorders.

When clients finish with the residential program, they have the option of stepping down to Community Program’s outpatient program. The outpatient program consists of group and individual meetings. The length and intensity of the program is based on the needs of the client. Group meetings focus on relationship skills, addiction education and using CBT to change negative thought patterns. Individual meetings are available based on the needs of the client.

The organization has roughly 15 counselors on staff for the residential program and 12 for the outpatient program. The counselors are a mix of CADCs, LPCs, MSWs, LMSWs and Limited Licensed Psychologists (LLPs).

Extras

Clients are given time for both indoor and outdoor recreation. The building has board games, billiards, ping pong and shuffleboard for indoor recreation. Outside, the facility has an area with a basketball court, volleyball net and trail for walking.

Community Programs does provide aftercare services to clients graduating from the residential program. If clients choose to not enter into the outpatient program, Community Services provides them with the opportunity to check in regularly with counselors and return for a individual sessions if they wish.

In Summary

Community Programs Inc. is a comprehensive and affordable treatment option for clients in the Oakland County area. The short length of the residential program provides clients an alternative to longer and more intensive inpatient treatment options. The on-staff doctor provides a high level of support to clients with co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the extra focus on changing a person’s thought patterns might be ideal for clients who have repeatedly relapsed in the past.
