Community Improvement AssociatesCommunity Improvement Associates Review

Community Improvement Associates (CIA) was founded in 2001 in Keene, New Hampshire, a small town in Cheshire County. The organization offers outpatient services to adult men and women struggling with substance abuse or related issues.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at CIA begins with an in-person evaluation and screening with a counselor to determine the client’s potential level of care. This meeting is followed by a formal assessment to help the client plan out their treatment plan at the facility. If the counselors believe the client is in need of a higher level of care, he or she is referred to an outside detox or residential program.

CIA offers both an individual counseling program and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The IOP lasts for at least six months and consists of both group and individual therapy. The groups meet three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 4pm to 7pm. These meetings are led by one counselor and consist of eight to 12 clients per group. The groups are centered around education as well as sharing, and the counselors encourage interaction between members in the groups. The counselors implement a variety of treatment techniques including CBT and cover various topics such as anger management and relapse prevention, to name a few. Clients in the IOP also attend at least one individual session per week.

The counselors at CIA also utilize the 12 steps on an individual basis if they believe certain steps may help a particular clients’ needs. Attendance at outside AA and NA meetings while in the program is strongly recommended.

The IOP is dual diagnosis, and CIA has a mental health counselor on staff who deals specifically with clients who have potential co-occurring disorders.

The staff at CIA consists of both LADCs as well as MLADC’s.

Extras

CIA offers family counseling for the family members and clients. However, the client must agree to these meetings before the counselors can move forward with them.

After clients leave CIA, checking in regularly with the counselors is highly encouraged. Clients are also allowed to return for group meetings at any time.

CIA also operates a sexual offender group in the facility. This group is totally separate from the substance abuse programs and meets in a different part of the building.

In Summary

Community Improvement Associates offers intensive and individualized outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults clients in the Keene area. The on-staff mental health counselor proves an advanced level of psychiatric help for clients with co-occurring issues. Additionally, the focus on clients interacting and sharing with other clients in the groups allows them to develop relationships with each other that can help them build a strong support group when they step down from the IOP.
