Community Health Addiction Treatment

Community Health Addiction Treatment

According to the National Center on Addiction and Drug Abuse (CASA), over 90 percent of the people who have an addiction began drinking, smoking or using drugs before reaching the age of 18. Although addiction is a multifaceted condition, addiction treatment centers are available. Every patient is unique, which is why at the Community Health Addiction Recovery Centers, patients receive a treatment plan that is tailored to fit their specific needs.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that in 2013 more than 9 percent of individuals 12 years of age and older admitted to illicit drug use within the month prior to being surveyed; additionally, almost 3 percent admitted to using psychotherapeutic medications for nonmedical purposes during that same period.

Physical Dependence and Addiction

Physical dependence frequently occurs when an individual uses an illicit drug or prescribed medication for an extended length of time. Physical dependence on a drug is not necessarily considered an addiction; however, physical dependence frequently accompanies addiction.

Addiction can be defined as the compulsive use of drugs regardless of the harmful consequences that result. When an individual is addicted to an illicit drug or prescription medication, he/she is unable to stop using the medication or the drug. In time, this continued use will begin to negatively affect his/her life.

He/She may:

  • Disregard work, family and/or social obligations.
  • Become physically dependent on the drug. As the individual’s tolerance level for the drug rises, he/she will need to take a higher dose to stop the withdrawal symptoms.
