Community Counseling and MediationCommunity Counseling and Mediation Review

Community Counseling and Mediation was founded in 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. The organization was born in the founder’s basement and has since grown into a full-scale substance abuse and mental health treatment organization. Community Counseling and Mediation offers outpatient counseling to adult men and women in the Brooklyn borough and New York City at large.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Community Counseling and Mediation begins with a phone assessment with a staff member followed by a more in-depth in-person assessment with a counselor. If the counselor believes the client is in need of a more comprehensive form of addiction treatment, he or she can be referred to a facility equipped with a residential or detox program.

Community Counseling and Mediation’s outpatient program lasts for as long as the client needs and consists of both group and individual therapy. The intensity of the program varies but usually ranges from one to four group meetings per week. The group sizes are usually small with four to six clients per session and are led by one counselor. These meetings consist of relapse prevention, education and sharing. Individual counseling is available based on the needs of the client. Twelve-step recovery is not a part of the curriculum here.

Community Counseling and Mediation is a dual diagnosis facility and clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to its mental heath program. Counselors in the mental health program primarily utilize CBT in their treatment.

All of the substance abuse counselors at Community Counseling and Mediation are CASACs.

Extras

Community Counseling and Mediation does not facilitate an extensive family program but a client’s family members are allowed to attend individual meetings with the client if he or she permits. These meetings focus on co-dependency issues and substance abuse education.

Community Counseling and Mediation does not offer an aftercare program. As such, the counselors allow clients to have a steady step-down process so that they are truly ready to leave treatment when they complete the program.

In Summary

Community Counseling and Mediation is an intimate and affordable treatment option for adults suffering with substance abuse problems in Brooklyn and beyond. The low cost of the program allows client of all economic backgrounds and incomes to get the help they need. The existence of a mental heath department within the facility is an added incentive for clients struggling with co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the small size of the groups allows for a significant amount of individualized attention from the counselors.
