The Basics
St. Mary’s Community Clinical Services in Lewiston, Maine, is part of the St. Mary’s Regional Health System. Originally established in 1888 in a small house owned by the Sisters of Charity of St. Hyacinthe, CCS has since become part of Maine’s largest health facility. Offering detox and outpatient care programs for those struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, CCS is dedicated to serving its clients with respect and compassion.
Accommodations and Food
Clients of the six-bed acute, voluntary detox program stay in a special wing of the main hospital. They share a room with another person of the same gender if the unit is full. Meals are provided by the hospital cafeteria and are served in the rooms. Dietary restrictions are honored.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment with an intake specialist, treatment plans are designed for each client on an individualized basis. A medical detox, if needed, generally lasts between three and five days. This program is designed to treat adults with a chemical dependency, as well as those with co-occurring mental health conditions. Medical staff monitor clients’ withdrawal and provide medications when appropriate. After the completion of detox, the client follows a plan that usually includes Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP).
In order to participate in outpatient treatment, all clients must enter the program substance free. If individuals are on prescription medications, they must disclose that information and may be required to discontinue use before beginning treatment.
The IOP is based on 12-step principles and is group therapy-focused. Two programs run four days a week, Monday through Thursday—from either 11:30 am to 4:15 pm, or from 4 to 8 pm. The earlier group is designed for those with co-occurring conditions. In general, group meetings are centered on process and educational topics. Coping skills, relapse prevention and the physical and emotional impact of substance abuse are all covered.
CCS staff is made up of board certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and registered nurses, as well as Master’s-level certified social workers (LCSW-M) and addiction counselors (LCAC-M), and certified therapeutic recreational specialists (CTRS).
Extras
Weekly family program days and individually scheduled family therapy sessions are offered to loved ones who desire to be a part of the recovery process. Aftercare is an option, offering a step down treatment schedule that requires fewer days in either a group or individual therapy setting.
Alternative therapy methods are available including recreational and music therapy.
In Summary
Community Clinical Services is, in addition to being part of one of the largest health care systems in Maine, a compassionate resource dedicated to its clients’ health and wellness. Providing a continuum of care that includes dual diagnosis support makes CCS a good choice for those with co-occurring disorders seeking tools for continued recovery.
