Come Rest AwhileCome Rest Awhile Sober Living Review

Come Rest Awhile is a female-only sober living house founded in 2001 by executive director Nancy Engeman whose sobriety date is December 24, 1975. Located in a quiet, residential neighborhood in Lake Oswego, Oregon, Come Rest Awhile lodges clients in a cute cottage-style house with steep roof pitches, storybook windows and stone siding covered by crawling ivy.

Accommodations and Amenities

Come Rest Awhile accommodates no more than 10 women at a time. The house includes a country-style dining room, kitchen, living room, TV room, 5 bathrooms and 4 bedrooms. Rooms are double-occupancy and furnished with beds, a dresser with a mirror. Bedding and towels are provided, and the house has laundry facilities. Smoking is allowed on the patio that has a round table, chairs and hanging Chinese paper lanterns. The fenced backyard has a picturesque stone paved garden with a birdbath, tulips, and an abundance of trees. Off-street parking is available, and public transportation is within a short walking distance.

All food is included as part of the cost of rent. With the help of the live-in house manager, the women create a grocery list and shop on a weekly basis, purchasing food and household necessities, like laundry detergent. During the day, clients prepare their own meals per their schedules, but women pair up and take turns preparing dinner for the entire household. All utilities, including Internet and cable, are also included.

Rules and Regulations

At Come Ret Awhile, there is no minimum time commitment and some clients stay longer than a year. The women have a 10:30 pm curfew Sunday through Thursday and an 11 pm curfew on Friday and Saturday. Clients must be out of their rooms by 10 am seven days a week. Clients are required to go to school, volunteer in the community, attend outpatient treatment or work. The house manager conducts random alcohol and drug screenings. Come Rest Awhile has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and drug usage. Those testing positive are evicted immediately. While visitors are welcomed at the house, gentleman callers must stay in a common area on the first floor.

Clients are assigned household chores, and the women take turns cleaning different parts of the residence. Come Rest Awhile implements a 12-step protocol. During their first month of residency, clients are required to attend 30 AA meetings in 30 days. After that, they must attend at least three 12-step meetings per week, get a sponsor and work their steps. In addition, their presence at an in-house AA meeting on Tuesday nights is required, as well as at a weekly house gathering.

Extras

The house manager is in recovery and acts as a mentor to the women. Scholarships are available on a limited basis for financially challenged clients.

In Summary

While this is not a great fit for those who are looking for an urban environment or opposed to the 12-step philosophy, for women seeking a family-style environment in a picturesque setting, Come Rest A While is a good choice. This cozy sober living community offers warmth and the chance to bond with other women while concentrating on sobriety and creating a new life.
