Columbus Public Health Department breaks free outpatient alcohol and drug abuse treatment to the residents of Columbus, Ohio into three categories: prevention, intervention and supporting services.

Treatment and Staff

Prevention services at CPHD has three options: Y.E.S. (You’re Extra Special) designed for children between the ages of eight and 13 who have been affected by alcohol or drug abuse. Twelve educational classes teach kids about substance abuse and provide them with a safe and stable environment to learn and ask questions. The Leadership Resiliency is for students between the ages of 14 and 19 and focuses on coping strategies, goal setting and building and maintaining healthy relationships. The S.A.G.E Program (Substance Abuse General Education) is geared towards children and families who have not been exposed to drugs and alcohol abuse but are interested in prevention and staying educated.

CPHD’s intervention services also offer three different options: Saving Our Selves, which is community outreach for adolescents and young adults (between the ages of 14 and 25) and offers education on substance abuse, sexual health and HIV. The HIV Early Intervention Program offers free testing, counseling and STI educational courses.

Finally, the outpatient program includes and initial assessment, case management, individual and group therapy including gender-specific groups. The program meets three days a week, in the morning or the evening, for both women and men’s groups. Relapse prevention is offered and especially useful for those who have had a hard time staying sober. There are also two specific treatment groups, one for African-American men and one or women, each focusing on the special needs of their demographic. Staff  at CPHD are certified drug and alcohol addiction counselors.

Extras

Beyond and supplemental to addiction treatment, CPHD also offers supporting services including parenting classes, child care services and local transportation.
