The Counseling Center of Columbiana CountyThe Basics

The Counseling Center of Columbiana County (CCCC) offers evidence-based treatment for substance abuse to the citizens of Lisbon, Ohio, the county seat of northeastern Ohio’s Columbiana County. Founded on November 1, 1969 by the Columbiana Mental Health Association, the center strives to be the area’s leading behavioral health center through advocating the elimination of mental illness stigma and advancing methodologies for the treatment of mental health issues and addiction.

Treatment and Staff

The process to begin outpatient substance abuse services at the CCCC starts with a two-hour drug and alcohol assessment to understand the client’s patterns and to develop an appropriate individualized treatment plan. The center does not currently offer detox. It is also not at all 12-step based but instead leans more toward evidence-based practices such as Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and CBT.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at CCCC is a regimen for clients who are addicted to mood altering chemicals or have high risk dependency levels. It is a combination of individual and group therapy in addition to psychoeducation. This group meets for three hours, three times a week for four consecutive weeks.

In addition to the IOP, CCCC offers multiple types of general outpatient group sessions. All groups have no more than ten people at a time. The groups cover a variety of topics. For example, one group is the Insight Group, a small program where clients reflect on the negative effects of chemical use, abuse and related information. Clients are able to successfully complete the program in six sessions. They meet for two hours each time for six consecutive weeks.

The individual therapy provided at CCCC focuses on the negative effects of drug and alcohol abuse while providing guidance for living a healthier life and understanding their past reasons for usage. The length of individual therapy depends on the client; some attend once a week while most average one to two times a month.

There is also a community for adults who have a substance abuse problems coupled with a severe mental disability (SAMI). These support services include evaluation and assessment needs; developing an individual service plan; providing training and connections through community resources and performing daily living activities.

Dual diagnosis support, housing and employment services are also available.

All therapists are dual-licensed in both mental health and chemical dependency by the state of Ohio. SAMI case managers are licensed as chemical dependency counselors. Altogether there are ten staff members in the substance abuse services division of the CCCC, but 147 in the full Columbiana County mental health clinic. There is a psychiatrist on staff.

Extras

CCCC provides an aftercare group that focuses on relapse prevention techniques and information. It is recommended clients attend eight sessions within a three-month period. This particular group is intended for clients who have completed the IOP program, been in substance abuse counseling in the past or have relapsed. They meet for two hours once a week.

Group and individual services are offered at the county jail. They help those who are imprisoned receive counseling before they are released.

There is also a Family Night Group intended for educating loved ones on the disease of addiction and treatment resources available in the community.

In Summary

The Counseling Center of Columbiana County offers an evidenced-based, integrated program of individual and group therapy to inform and guide clients away from chemical abuse and maintain abstinence. CCCC accepts Medicare, Medicaid, self-pay and sliding scale. It does not discriminate on cost and believes that finances should not be a barrier when asking for help.
