Columbia University Eating Disorder Center Review
The Columbia University Eating Disorder Center, founded in New York, New York in 1979, is a subsidiary research clinic owned and operated through Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry. The facility provides care plans to both men and women in recovery from eating disorders in a range of intensities. In addition to its various outpatient options, the organization also offers acute inpatient treatment programs.
Accommodations and Food
Inpatient residents stay at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, specifically in a wing called The Outlook at Westchester, which has a total of 17 beds available. There are separate wings for adults and adolescents with typical stays lasting for seven to 14 days. The building is fairly clinical, with dorm-style accommodations and private rooms with twin beds, dressers, desks and closet space. The building also includes common areas with couches and cable TV, therapy rooms, a dining area and expansive outdoor walking areas.
Throughout their stay, clients are served three healthy meals a day plus snacks. All meal plans are designed by on-staff dietitians and chefs and meal times are supervised.
Treatment and Staff
Before programs begin, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members develop their care plans. Because the clinic is a fully-equipped medical facility, those in need of detox or stabilization services can receive them on-site. Once stabilized, all participants attend individual, group and family therapy sessions with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Support for co-occurring disorders is provided along with medication management whenever necessary.
In addition to the clinical approaches above, groups also cover topics including healthy body image, emotional processing, meal planning, nutritional counseling and stress management. Though clients are not required to attend 12-step recovery meetings, referrals to local meetings are available upon request. After clients complete the inpatient stabilization phase of treatment, the clinical staff woks with them to develop a plan for outpatient care.
The staff at Columbia University Eating Disorder Center consists of psychiatrists, MDs, psychologists, RNs, LPCs, LCSWs, dietitians, LMHCs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.
Extras
Standalone services including behavioral health evaluations and tests are also available. Treatment plans may also include a host of holistic therapy methods including yoga, movement groups and mindfulness training.
