Columbia University Eating Disorder Center Outpatient Review

Founded in 1979, Columbia University Eating Disorder Center is a behavioral health clinic affiliated with the famous University in New York, New York. The research clinic is subsidiary of the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry. The facility provides a range of programs to men and women struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. In addition to its inpatient services, the organization also offers flexible outpatient treatment plans.

Treatment and Staff

Before beginning therapy, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. Those in need of detox or stabilization services can do so on-site at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital before continuing on to therapy. Once stabilized, participants can attend standard outpatient, day treatment or Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) as necessary. While day treatment only meets for three hours per session on weekdays, PHP provides full days of treatment Monday through Friday.

In all the above, treatment includes individual, group and family therapy with evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Dual diagnosis support and medication management services are available as well. While all programs may differ, groups generally cover topics including healthy body image, nutritional counseling, stress management and emotional processing. While 12-step participation is not required, participants can get referrals to nearby meetings as necessary.

The staff at the Columbia University Eating Disorder Center consists of MDs, psychiatrists, psychologists, RNs, LPCs, LCSWs, dietitians, LMHCs and additional Master’s and PhD-level clinicians.

Extras

Other services include standalone behavioral health evaluations and tests. The above programs also include some holistic care methods such as yoga and movement groups and mindfulness training. Those who complete primary care can also step down their programs or work with staff to develop aftercare plans.

In Summary

Overall, the Columbia University Eating Disorder Center provides medical and psychiatric supervision and support for clients struggling with eating disorders. Outpatient care is available in a range of intensities, each of which include evidence-based care, nutritional counseling, supervised meals and holistic care methods. While the cost of each plan may vary by insurance, those looking for an outpatient program for eating disorders would do well to consider Columbia University’s Eating Disorder Center.
