Clouds House Review
Clouds House has been providing treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse since 1983. Set in the beautiful parklands of Wiltshire, England, Cloud House provides inpatient and aftercare programs in an historic and beautiful building.
Accommodations and Food
Bedrooms in the sprawling estate feature two, three and four beds, with privacy screens separating clients. Private rooms are not available, as community and separation from isolation is a key part of the philosophy of treatment. Laundering facilities are provided for clients to wash, dry and iron their clothes as needed. Clients may purchase toiletries and healthy snacks from the on-site store. Smoking is not allowed indoors, however there is a smoking area outside.
Meals are prepared on-site daily by a team of chefs, and are specially designed to be nutritionally balanced and low in refined sugar and saturated fats. A nutrition class is facilitated by the head Chef and addresses concerns and questions the clients may have, and also encourages healthier eating habits. Hot drinks are available at a drink station at all hours.
Treatment and Staff
Clients at Clouds House benefit from a highly structured treatment program and have the option of staying either four or six weeks. They attend group and individual therapy, workshops and lectures throughout the day, and are also assigned practical tasks and reading/writing assignments, which must be completed before graduating. Treatment is based in the 12-steps, and attendance at AA or NA meetings is required.
Additional creative therapies are incorporated into each client’s treatment plan, and may include creative writing, art therapy, drumming workshops, drama therapy and theater workshops. Therapeutic duties are assigned weekly to encourage life skills training and responsibility. These include basic cleaning tasks such as vacuuming and setting the table for meals.
Medical detox is performed on-site with the assistance of doctors and registered nurses. Dual diagnosis support is offered for clients with co-occurring disorders, through medication management and additional therapy. Staff includes licensed substance abuse counselors, doctors, nurses, therapists and psychologists.
Extras
A range of extra-curricular activities are offered year-round, and include croquet, badminton, table tennis and weekly excursions to a gym. There is also an opportunity to visit the small local town most Saturdays, providing the client is well enough. A musical participation group visits Clouds House every Friday night, and a selection of board games and newspapers is always available.
As part of their holistic approach to treatment, Clouds House also offers a range of alternative therapies to complement the 12-step and therapy-based modalities. These include Indian head massage, tai chi, acupuncture, relaxation, reflexology, yoga, aromatherapy, foot massage and shiatsu massage. Local Church of England and Catholic services are available each week, as is transportation to a mosque and Buddhist temple.
Aftercare initially begins for clients that complete the residential program, and consists of weekly visits to Clouds House. During these sessions, clients will participate in group therapy for the course of the day. Working with the client’s case manager, a schedule is then devised, with recommendations for frequency of visits made. Eventually, the clients come to Clouds House only monthly. Three to four family and couples therapy sessions are included in the aftercare program.
In Summary
Clouds House offers a strong foundation for 12-step based recovery set in the beautiful English countryside. Clients can enjoy the serene environment while focusing on their recovery. The highly structured program means clients are continually occupied with either therapy of homework, and are able to explore a wide range of activities to assist with their sobriety. The creative and additional therapies offered contribute to the luxurious atmosphere, for a relatively low price. The only drawback is that the cost does not include aftercare.
