In 2018, the CLARE Foundation merged with The Matrix Institute to form CLARE | MATRIX, a non-profit treatment organization that specializes in the care of clients and families struggling with the effects of alcohol and substance use disorders. Located in beautiful Santa Monica, California, CLARE | MATRIX provides affordable care and a curriculum that includes detox, residential treatment and outpatient services in addition to prevention. The 12-step recovery model is a cornerstone of the programming. Dual diagnosis support is available for individuals in the form of medical services and medication management.
Accommodations and Food
CLARE | MATRIX offers upscale gender-specific accommodations in scenic, breezy Santa Monica. With accommodations for 40 men and 40 women, the facility places a premium on community. Residents enjoy a tight-knit community of peers as well as the privacy necessary to focus on recovery. Both men and women stay in dormitory-style housing, with bedrooms equipped with twin sized beds, nice furnishings and plenty of space. Residents can relax in comfortable common areas with couches and flatscreen TVs.
The facility offers a nutritious and tasty menu that includes options for residents with specific dietary needs.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients go through an extensive intake evaluation that includes medical and psychological exams as well as a complete account of substance use. From there, the CLARE | MATRIX team designs the best possible individualized care strategy customized to address the unique needs, goals and circumstances of the client.
When necessary, residents transfer into the detox program. It includes around-the-clock supervision and medication like Vivitrol and Suboxone to help mitigate painful withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and hallucinations. Upon completion, clients enter the residential program. While the length of care varies from person to person, the average stay is 60 days with some individuals staying up to 90 days.
The facility employs a multifaceted approach that includes a number of therapeutic methods including evidence-based therapies, 12-step, psychoeducation, case management and psychiatric services. Clients engage in weekly individual therapy and daily group sessions with therapists trained in CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help resolve client’s ambivalence.
The facility offers psychoeducation courses that focus on topics like addiction, communication, stress and anger management as well as general wellness. Residents also participate in regular 12-step support meetings. It’s also worth mentioning, there are specialized tracks for pregnant and postpartum clients.
The staff is a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, mental health counselors, therapists and a consulting psychiatrist. As previously mentioned, medication management is available for individuals with co-occurring disorders.

The facility understands the vital role that family involvement plays in the success of a long-term, sustainable recovery. As a result, it offers family therapy sessions to improve communication, outline clear boundaries and nurture positive change.
