CieloCielo Sober Living Review

Co-founded in 2010 by Michele Garcia, who has been sober for 24 years, Cielo Sober Living in Desert Hot Springs, California provides women in recovery a safe haven inside a Mediterranean-style villa. The mission of this new-age sober living house is to help women get in touch with their “divine feminine energy” or their inner goddess, a holistic healing concept  that involves connecting to “feminine” qualities to promote healing and inner growth.

Accommodations and Amenities

The sand-colored Arabic-style villa includes three balconies and sits on five acres that is also home to horses and a dog. The interior of the house has a mystical motif, including an enormous amethyst crystal that is perched on an alcove by the kitchen. According to Garcia, the amethyst provides protection for the house. The house includes a washer, dryer and swimming pool.

At Cielo Sober Living, there are typically between four and six clients, not including Garcia, who lives on the premises. Single and double rooms are available. A double room has tiled floors, pink-colored walls, large windows, a dresser, twin beds with wooden headboards and colorful comforters. Technically, the clients are responsible for their own groceries, but Garcia does a majority of the food shopping. The kitchen is stocked with salmon, chicken, non-fat yoghurt and freshly ground coffee. At Cielo Sober Living, healthy eating is considered an important part of recovery.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients must have completed detox. Requirements include attending 12-step meetings, being at the Tuesday house meeting and attending the Sunday sound bath, an alternative healing technique for trauma that uses a Chinese gong and other instruments. The sound bath provides relaxation and balances the chakras—or energy centers—of an individual.

Clients participate in daily morning meditations with a crystal bowl, breath work with Shaman, Reiki healing, 12-step meetings followed by potluck dinners, mineral baths and music circles. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. There is zero tolerance for clients testing positive. The curfew is midnight from Sundays to Thursdays, and 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Addiction Therapeutic Services in Palm Springs collaborates with Cielo Sober Living and provides outpatient substance abuse treatment, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) from 9:30 am to 12:46 pm Mondays through Fridays. The IOP 30-day cost is $4,000.

Founder and house manager, Michele Garcia is a certified Spiritual Psychologist, as well as certified in Family Systemic intervention training.

Extras

Additionally, Garcia owns a Dodge mini van and transports the women to 12-step meetings.

Sobriety Fun Days are events at the house that include hiking, rock climbing, community outings, barbequing and Frisbee.

Cielo Sober Living is a member of the San Bernardino Sober Living Network, a network that emphasizes certain ideals in the sober living community.

In Summary

Cielo Sober Living sounds like a great environment for women seeking to find their inner goddess in recovery. For those who are interested in a more traditional treatment experience, there are plenty of outpatient substance abuse and treatment options, as well as 12-step meetings in the local community to choose from.
