Chugachmiut Review
Located in Anchorage, Alaska, Chugachmiut is a broad organization that offers flexible health and social services to the native communities of the Chugach region of Alaska. The organization runs clinics in Chenega Bay, Nanwalek, Port Graham, Seward and Tatitlek. In addition to its many primary healthcare services, flexible and outpatient-based behavioral health counseling is also provided. Still, those seeking these services typically have to travel to Anchorage for counseling. Flexible outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are available.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all clients go through an intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs. While the organization at large does provide some healthcare services, medical detox and stabilization services are not available. Though each program schedule may vary, IOP typically meets three times a week for three hours per session in the morning or evening. These programs typically last eight to 12 weeks.
In general, each program includes traditional Native American teachings, evidence-based psychotherapy and 12-step principles. Throughout the program, all clients are expected to attend nearby AA or NA meetings in addition to attending counseling. Groups cover many different topics including life skills, trigger identification, relapse prevention and emotional processing. While basic dual diagnosis support for issues like anxiety and depression may be available, those in need of more intensive medical or psychiatric care may need to seek additional help elsewhere.
The staff at Chugachmiut is wide-ranging and includes case managers, nurse practitioners, Behavioral Health Practitioners (BHP) and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Because Chugachmiut is such an expansive organization, it also offers many other services including vocational training, child care, scholarship programs, elder services and Head Start programs for children, among others. Tobacco cessation programs are also available along with special groups for domestic violence. Still, a full list of services are listed on their website. Those who complete a primary care plan can also work with staff members to develop step-down aftercare plans.

In all, Chugachmiut is a community-oriented organization with a wide range of flexible services to the native communities in the Chugach area. In addition to a range of medical options, it also facilitates behavioral health and counseling programs with evidence-based therapy, 12-step support and traditional Native American teachings. All programs are flexible and can be made to suit most schedules. While those in need of more intensive medical or psychiatric services may need additional care as well, Chugachmiut remains an invaluable resource to clients and families in the area.
