Wilmington, North Carolina’s Chrysalis Center is a comprehensive eating disorder and behavioral health treatment facility that offers outpatient services. Programming includes individual and group counseling, nutritional counseling, addiction treatment and educational services as well as trauma-informed care for children, adolescents and adults. In addition, adults can partake in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that also provides supportive meals psychiatric care. Programming is individualized and structured for all clients and includes an aftercare option.
Treatment and Staff
All new clients fill out a packet they can access online prior to their first appointment with their assigned therapist. The first informs the counselor what proper treatment paths to take and helps them develop a goal plan. In some cases individual therapy is the way to go, however Chrysalis offers a number of groups that can be folded into their treatment plan. Some group options are specifically geared towards clients with eating disorders, and include a supported meal group, weight maintenance, nutritional workshops and classes for clients who have undergone a weight loss surgery. Other groups are designed for clients who have experienced trauma or are struggling with other behavioral health issues. Some examples are mindfulness groups, motherhood based groups, intimacy between couples, and gender-specific options. For the most part, these sessions go for eight to ten weeks, and some groups offer continuation or step-down programming.
The adult IOP runs Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to about 6:45 pm. The IOP is mainly group therapy based and is comprised of a number of process groups and some expressive and experiential therapies, like art, music and movement. Treatment uses evidence-based approaches, like CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) TF-CBT and EMDR.
Younger clients are also treated for trauma and eating disorders at Chrysalis, but are also evaluated for learning disabilities, ADHD, anxiety and depression. The staff is comprised of LCSWs, LPCs, psychologists and addiction specialists. Though clients are not able to receive medication management services at this facility, the staff is often able to provide a referral to a qualified professional.

In Summary
Though Chrysalis Center is known for its work with eating disorder clients, it is also highly proficient when it comes to mental health concerns. The staff is very experienced working with all different kinds of issues and offers solid, helpful treatment in a safe and comfortable environment.
