Choices Rehabs Nelson Trust Review

Nelson Trust is a detox and residential treatment facility in the UK that’s part of the Choices Rehabs network. Roy and Mary Brash established Nelson Trust in 1985. It now offers a mixed gender and women’s only program. Each day includes structured group activities within a community based setting. Nelson Trust is a non-12-step based program, though it does offer an introduction to AA philosophies. Treatment mainly consists of abstinence and evidence-based therapeutic approaches and holistic modalities within a safe environment.

Accommodations and Food

There are two women specific houses and two coed houses. Clients share fully furnished bedrooms with one other client. In total there are about 40 beds. The facilities are comfortable and spacious, offering all the amenities that one finds at their own home.

Clients in all four facilities eat all their meals together, and take turns cooking for each other. There are regular grocery shopping trips that clients also trade off doing, along with cleaning up after the meals, and just generally keeping the facility nice and clean.

Treatment and Staff

The schedules are very balanced in both the co-ed and women’s only program. There are several group therapy sessions, workshops, activities and classes, and ample time to socialize and rest.

When arriving at their assigned facility, clients meet their treatment buddy, check out the house and meet other clients and staff members. Clients can expect to be in treatment 12 to 24 weeks. Within this time clients are really focusing on their personalized program, improving communications and repairing relationships. As a result, they establish an ability to identify emotions, express them in a healthy manner, and build up their self esteem.

Clients who wish to become a supporting member of the community can learn from staff in the Recovery Academy. This is where they gain the knowledge and skills to be a recovery mentor.

In addition to the daily process and goals groups, there are mindfulness and relapse prevention workshops, trauma informed groups and personal support from peers. Clients attend at least one individual therapy session every week.

These programs are based on CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR approaches. Finally, there are also opportunities for clients to express themselves creatively and continue to practice their faith in the community.

All staff are qualified addiction counselors with advanced degrees, nurses, coaches and support staff. Between the four facilities there are over 80 staff members. The women’s houses employ only other women.

Extras

Clients have the option to receive some complementary therapies and classes. This includes instructor-led yoga, a six week aromatherapy class, and a hands on reflexology learning experience. There are several vocational training classes held at the Education Training and Employment Center.

During down time clients are free to fish on their own, provided they bring their own poles and equipment. The local gym is available to all clients, as are adventure outings to kayak, go caving and rock climbing.

In Summary

Nelson Trust works to dispel the stigma attached to addiction and co-occurring disorders through education and caring, thorough treatment. It believes that anyone, no matter what their background is, can change with the right guidance. They focus on each client as an individual and provide them with the right treatment to serve their specific needs.
