Longreach House is a non-profit, women’s only addiction and co-occurring disorder treatment program in the UK, and the sister program to the men’s only facility, Broadreach House. They’re both part of the Choices network. Longreach is a detox and inpatient program. It focuses on treating women with complex needs. Longreach House, much like Broadreach, focuses on therapy as the cornerstone of programming, not 12-step recovery. However, it does coordinate attending AA, NA or SMART Recovery meetings per the client’s request. Above all, this intimate treatment program offers long term, intensive care that includes holistic, person centered services.
Accommodations and Food
Both detox and inpatient treatment take place in a residential home in a safe, quiet neighborhood. Between detox and residential, there are 25 beds. It’s worth noting, clients in the residential phase of treatment share their room with one other person.
The treatment campus is located in Plymouth. The sprawling grounds have space for outdoor activities, gardening and games. Clients can also have barbeques during social hours and during family visits, which is available after the first week. While the facility is non-smoking, there are areas throughout the campus where it permits smoking. Having said that, Longreach does offer smoking cessation services.
Clients eat together in the dining room daily. They enjoy meals that an in-house chef prepares. The chef can honor dietary restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
Longreach House assigns each incoming client with a buddy, who takes them around the facility and introduces them to the staff and other residents. During the two week detox, clients have group and individual therapy, and complete personal written assignments.
Residential treatment lasts between six and 24 months. Every day begins with an early morning wake up and check in group. Then it proceeds with a series of group sessions and activities.
Longreach offers a number of specialty treatments for women who have experienced a trauma, sexual issues, eating disorders or other related issues that may have led to low self image and esteem.
The trauma group meets for 10 weeks and employs the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy model and psychoeducation. During the shame resilience group and foundations of a healthy relationship group, the focus in on repairing old notions and how the clients view themselves due to violence in the home. They also learn about replacing negative self talk with positive thoughts and actions.
Daily activities incorporate learning new life skills and improving social function. Recovery maintenance meets weekly. It uses CBT approaches while setting long term goals for after treatment and relapse prevention.
The treatment team at Longreach are physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, nurses and addiction specialists.
Longreach has a donkey sanctuary close by that provides animal assisted therapy. There is also the Sunflower Project with a cafe and meeting space.
Some of the Longreach activities include camping trips and visits to the Butterfly Conservation farm. Other therapeutic experiences include martial arts, Tai Chi, a theatre group, gardening, cooking classes, going to the local gym, swimming, and visiting the tourist destinations in town.
The women of Longreach House come to treatment after they have gone through a number of hardships that might have led to the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Ultimately, this program fosters an empowering and caring approach. The facility gears the curriculum specifically towards women and their needs. They gain comprehensive recovery skills as well as insight into their bright and hopeful future in recovery.
