With Florida’s beautiful beaches as its backdrop, Ft. Lauderdale-based Choices Recovery offers men and women a safe, supportive sober living environment in which to begin the next phase of recovery. Choices has three houses for men and three for women, all of which are in close proximity to each other as well as to 12-step meetings, shopping and, of course, plenty of sand and surf.
Accommodations and Amenities
Two of the residences are condominiums, and the other four are private houses. Each accommodates between six and eight residents, with two or three to a room. There are at least two bathrooms, and often three, in each house. The furnishings are modern and comfortable, with Wi-Fi, a communal computer and cable TV. The floors are tiled and there’s a washer and dryer in each house. Residents are responsible for their own grocery shopping and for preparing meals in a spacious kitchen with modern appliances.
Rules and Regulations
Upon arrival, residents are informed in writing of the house rules and regulations and are required to sign consent forms. This is a zero-tolerance operation when it comes to policies and procedures. Residents have to follow staff directives and demonstrate respect and consideration for the rights and property of others at all times. They have short- and long-term goals and also follow their prescribed treatment plans, keeping the house manager apprised of any changes or concerns.
House managers must also be informed ahead of time of any prescribed medications in a resident’s possession. There is random urine analysis in addition to drug testing and a resident must submit to a search if it is requested.
Within two weeks of moving in, residents must secure a 12-step sponsor and join an abstinence group. They are required to attend 90 meetings in 90 days, followed by at least four meetings each week thereafter. Mandatory on-site 12-step meetings for men are held on Tuesdays at 8:30 pm; women’s meetings are Wednesdays at 6:45 pm. There is also a mandatory residents’ meeting each week, overseen by the house manager.
Employment is regarded as an essential part of sober living and residents at Choices must secure a job within the first two weeks of admission. Those who do not must be awake and dressed by 9 am weekday mornings (until they get a job) and be off the property from 9:30 am until 3 pm. Weekly chores are assigned and residents are expected to keep their bedrooms and common areas clean.
Behaviors that result in immediate eviction are: theft, physical violence, verbal threats and possession of any weapons.
Smoking is permitted in designated, outdoor areas. Visitors of the opposite sex are not permitted in bedrooms, but they are allowed to visit on the property until curfew, which is 10 pm the first week and then 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays thereafter. The curfew is 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Overnight passes can be obtained after 30 days of residency and with 24-hour notice.
There is a community swimming pool located at the clubhouse, where 12-step meetings are also held. Yoga, exercise and sports activities are also available. Choices encourages sober events such as celebrating holidays, birthdays and milestones in recovery as group activities.
Choices Recovery offers a comfortable, safe and supportive environment with the overriding mission of achieving long-term recovery. Public transportation is easily accessible and, for relaxation, there is shopping and the nearby beaches. With the close proximity of all six houses to each other, the opportunity for camaraderie is increased, which translates into more support in the journey to sustained sober living.
