Choices for Recovery Review
Choices for Recovery opened its doors in the fall of 2016 to provide a holistic approach to substance abuse treatment for men and women in Charlotte, North Carolina. It offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) with a gender-specific sober living option. Programs focus on healing the whole person through traditional therapeutic methods, elements of the 12 steps and alternative therapies.
Treatment and Staff
Choices for Recovery offers individualized care for every client and an initial assessment determines which program and approaches are the best fit. While it does not offer detox, Choices can provide referrals for outside agencies to those in need of more intensive care. Clients with co-occurring disorders receive additional psychological support. The duration of treatment usually lasts 90 days, though the total length in the program can vary.
The PHP lasts for six hours a day, Monday through Friday, and consists of multiple group sessions, along with at least one individual session a week. Groups are gender-specific and co-ed groups available, as well as ones specifically dedicated to trauma-informed care and co-occurring disorders. Therapy methods include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and neurofeedback. After 30 days, clients transition to the IOP, which meets three times a week for three hours of group therapy, with individual sessions as needed. Required AA/NA meetings are also offered on site in the evening.
The team at Choices is made up of a good mix of Master’s-level therapists, holistic practitioners and support staff.
Extras
The program incorporates holistic approaches like art therapy, meditation, nutritional counseling, yoga and Tai Chi.
The co-ed sober living home has space for a total of eight clients. The house is equipped with a full kitchen, washer and dryer and attractive furnishings that are clean and comfortable. Residents share rooms and bathrooms with one other person. They build life skills by shopping for groceries and preparing their own meals.
