Based out of Boulder, Colorado, Choice House is a rehab facility and a recovery community offering several different treatment options for clients struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders. The programs are available to men only and strive to approach treatment from an all-encompassing perspective that involves activity and physical exercise. While the organization also offers a combined sober living and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) option, the more intensive plan is its 90-day extended residential treatment.
Accommodations and Food
The residential home is a lodge-style house in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with a total of 18 beds available for men in double-occupancy rooms. Each of the rooms comes with full beds, nightstands and dressers. In addition to the bedrooms, the home also has common areas with TV, a dining room, outdoor lounge areas, a game room with a ping-pong table and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, all clients are served three healthy meals a day by a team of on-staff chefs.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all prospective residents go through an initial assessment process to help the staff determine their needs and treatment history. As a non-medical facility, those in need of detox will need to complete that phase of care before attending. While the specific activities vary on a day by day basis, a typical day begins with medication, breakfast and chores before moving into a series of individual and group therapy groups as well as outdoor activities. Therapy relies on evidence-based care methods including psychoeducation, CBT, DBT and EMDR. Throughout the program, all residents work a 12-step program as well. In general, the program is broken up into three phases, the first two of which are dedicated to more generalized stabilization and therapy. In the third phase, staff members work directly with clients to hone in on their own, specific recovery goals—this can sometimes mean helping them find jobs, developing schedules and life habits and so on. Basic dual diagnosis support is available as well.
The staff at Choice House consists of LPCs, LACs, LCSWs, licensed drug and alcohol counselors and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
All residents also get a YMCA membership included with their stay, along with plenty of time to go to the gym. As mentioned, the organization also offers further sober housing and IOP care as a form of stepped down aftercare whenever necessary.
In all, Choice House is a well-rounded program with gender-specific and physically-oriented care to men in recovery from substance abuse. Throughout their 90-day residential program, all clients attend therapy, exercise, attend 12-step meetings and learn how to manage their lives in all aspects. While those in need of more intensive medical or psychiatric supervision may need to seek help elsewhere, Choice House’s extended residential treatment program remains a strong option for men in the area.
