The Basics
Located in Boulder, Colorado, Choice House is a rehab facility and recovery community that offers treatment services to men struggling with addiction and related behavioral health issues. The facility’s programs are all-encompassing, gender-specific and rely heavily on physical activity and exercise in addition to therapy. In addition to the organization’s residential program, it also offers a more flexible sober living plus Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well.
Accommodations and Amenities
The sober living component of the program consists of nine houses total in the Boulder area and a total of 29 beds. All rooms are private and come with full beds, dressers, nightstands and other basic decorations. While the layout of each house may vary, each one is set up like a normal home with shared common areas with Internet and TV, dining rooms, meeting areas and fully equipped kitchens. Throughout their stay, all clients are expected to cook and prepare their own meals.
Rules and Regulations
While Choice House’s program does allow clients a fair degree of independence to travel to and from job interviews and work as necessary, the IOP portion requires them to meet three times a week for a total of nine hours of group therapy. There’s also an additional hour of individual therapy a week as well. As with most sober living facilities, all residents must submit to regular and random drug testing as well. When they’re not working, going to school or volunteering in the community, all clients also attend educational groups covering job skills, resume building, budgeting, grocery shopping and other related topics. Throughout their stay, residents are also expected to attend regular 12-step meetings as well.
The staff at Choice House consists of LPCs, LACs, LCSWs, licensed drug and alcohol counselors and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
As mentioned, those seeking more intensive care can also attend Choice House’s extended residential care plan as necessary. Lengths of stay in the sober living are flexible and case managers are available to help alums with wraparound aftercare planning whenever necessary as well. With the rent that clients pay to stay at Choice House, they are also granted complimentary YMCA memberships.

In all, Choice House is a well-rounded program designed to help men struggling with addiction get back on their feet. Although the program does offer the independence and flexibility of a standard IOP, the sober housing allows additional flexibility and guidance. The program includes 12-step participation, job guidance and evidence-based group therapy. For men in early recovery looking for an active and community-oriented care environment, Choice House’s sober living programs are worth considering.
